Oct-07-08 | | VooDooMoves: <MAJ> oops! I havent slept all day and my brain isnt working properly. Please all just ignore my posts after my 1st. |
Oct-07-08 | | VooDooMoves: <missingkasparov> <voo doo you still at it?> Yup. For some reason I kept putting my knight on d4 thinking Ne6 playable and even confusing the issue further still by calling e6 d5! Thats what happens when you work nights: everything is backwards :/ |
Oct-07-08 | | agb2002: Black forces are scattered and several white pieces aim at the black king. The first line that comes to mind leads to a forced mate in three moves: 28.Rxh7+ Kxh7 29.Qh3+ Kg7 30.Qh6 mate. |

Meh. Bleh. Pff. Gah. Tssk. Wha. Thispuzzleistooeasy.
<27.?>
White: a4, c3. d4, g5, h2, Ne5, Be6, Rd1, Rh3, Qd3, Kg1 Black: a7, b7, f5, g6, h7, Ne4, Be8, Ra8, Rf8, Qa3, Kh8 Material: =
Candidates: Rxh7†
-ML-
Ok, what has Black been doing the last.... 27 moves?
<28.Rxh7† Kxh7 29.Qh3† Kg7 30.Qh6‡ 1-0> Oh, and: lol @ <VooDooMoves>: so sure 28.Nd5 wins, which is actually supposed to be Ne6, but neither is legal... do you do that in your games also :P? |
Oct-07-08 | | stacase: You know, I congratulate myself on solving these easy puzzles in a minute or so, but over the board, I'd be squirming and checking everything out real good before I sacrifice anything more than a Pawn. Yes, I know, I should check everything out real good for every move. |
Oct-07-08 | | VooDooMoves: <TheaN>
That's what happens when you set up the position wrong and analyze half asleep. Laugh all you want :).....it is pretty funny. And no, I don't do that in my games unless I'm playing bughouse and I play N@e6. |
Oct-07-08 | | gtgloner: Looks like mate in 3 starting with RxP ch. |
Oct-07-08 | | ALwoodpusher: <White Star> What was 17.a4 for? I wondered the very same thing. I think it's because of 17...b5 18.Bxd5 (or gxf5 c4! as well) c4! and black seems to get some counterplay. |

 | | chrisowen: Afternoon, I engineer this type of stonewall often so I know it pays handsomely when Capablanca plays 18.g4 opening the a2-g8 diagonal. Nevermind questions of attack..stop the rook sac, stop the mate! |
Oct-07-08 | | johnlspouge: Tuesday (Easy):
Capablanca vs G Vassaux, 1939 (28.?) White to play and win.
Material: Even. The Black Kh8 has 1 legal move. White has superior development, with a battery Rd1 and Qd3 backing the passed Pd4, an outpost Ne5, an advanced Be6, and most potently Rh3 on the semi-open h-file facing Ph7 and Kh8. The local K-side superiority justifies searching for a sacrificial attack, particularly with Qd3 ready to reload Rh3. Candidates (28.): Rxh7+
28.Rxh7+ Kxh7 29.Qh3+ Kg7 30.Qh6# |

Oct-07-08 | | johnlspouge: Toga II 1.3.1 says 26...Qe7 would led to an even position. In retrospect, 26...Nxg5 looks as though Black is trying to help White to mate. |
Oct-07-08 | | Marmot PFL: Black really played it out to mate? |
Oct-07-08 | | Ladolcevita: Hey,Marmot,your icon is cute |
Oct-07-08
 | | sleepyirv: Heh, keep your pawns close to the king.
A rather easy mate in three. |
Oct-07-08 | | YetAnotherAmateur: <WhiteStar>: I'm no expert, but I believe 17. a4 was meant to stop any exploiting of b5 by black. |
Oct-07-08 | | beenthere240: 27. Qh7#! wins on the spot -- the flying lady ploy. |
Oct-07-08 | | JG27Pyth: 27...Qe7 is more interesting than 27...Ne4? IMO. I think it holds on a bit longer. |

Oct-07-08 | | Zzyw: Main characteristic of position: Black's weak kingside. First candidate move: RxP+, which leads to a simple forced mate. Little easy for a tuesday, I can usually not solve those at first glance. |

 | | playground player: Oh, boy! I played those last couple of moves just like Capablanca! |
Oct-07-08 | | Woody Wood Pusher: It's a pity there wasn't tougher opposition around in Capa's time (or should that be tougher willing opposition eh' Alekhine you runner-roo!), he really chewed this guy up. |
Oct-07-08 | | kevin86: A very easy mate in three beginning with a rook sacrifice;pretty easy for Tuesday-or ARE there two Mondays this week? lol |
Oct-07-08 | | A.G. Argent: <An Englishman>< If you're going to let your opponent build up an overwhelming position like this, at least force him or her to sacrifice something to get here.> Of course that's true but with Capa's position after 21.Rh3, solidifying beginnings of a full blown assault right down the throat of this Vassaux fella's King, maybe the guy got a bit rattled. I mean, look at his record, incomplete or not. Hardly a stellar one, so he mighta known he was more than a bit out of his league and what you might call toast. By '39, Capablanca's reputation must have been extremely imposing for someone like this guy. I mean, as Reti said, chess was the Cuban's mother tongue. |
