Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-11-10  belgradegambit: Juergen Dueball contributed a lot to Dragon theory 40 years ago. Yes 15...Rxc3 is a stock dragon sac but the follow-up play is quite interesting. 20...f6 is the kind of move us patzers make which usually gets pounded but strong players know when to violate rules and imprison the Dragon bishop.
Feb-21-23  victory1: Q takes p trade queens looks like draw

beatgiant: <victory1> If you mean the final position, Black has a book win with 64. Qxa6+ Qd6+ 65. Qxd6+ Kxd6. Black's bishop is the same color as the h-pawn's queening square.
Feb-21-23  goodevans: White missed a stunning way to stop the pawn promoting.

38.Qe2!

Now 38...b1=Q? loses to 39.Qc4+ Kh8 40.Qf7 so Black must settle for 38...Qe6 39.Qxe4 Qxd7. For now, Black has three pawns for the exchange but after 40.Rb8 the advanced pawn isn't going to last long and it's anyone's game.

All of which means that, objectively speaking, 36...cxb2 was probably a mistake.

Feb-21-23  victory1: I tried playing it out after the exchange of queens..can't find win for black
Feb-21-23  victory1: Esp since his last pawn will be an h pawn
Feb-21-23  goodevans: <victory1> The h-pawn is not a problem because Black's B is on the light squares, the same as the promoting square (otherwise, yes, it's a draw).

Have a go with this: https://syzygy-tables.info/?fen=8/7...

You can try picking different moves with White but always pick the top move for Black and you'll see that Black can eventually win the White pawns and promote his own.

Feb-21-23  Vermit: I never knew that 3.d4 was not the best move until reading Stockfish's annotations!

Aside from myself, I can name probably half a dozen other regular kibitzers here that have lambasted the ridiculous annotations of standard opening moves. Doesn't help anyone. Detracts from the game.

At least today I got to play through the GOTD before the dreaded SF annotations got added.

I LOVE opening annotations!

perfidious: Dang it, <Vermit>, y'all thought you could play? Guess again!

What is even worse is that there is a poster ever at the gallop to flay me if I so much as suggest that Fishie et al have no real place at the very beginning.

Hahahahaha!

Feb-21-23  RadioBoy: I remember playing in the 1971 US Amateur in Philadelphia. George Koltanowski was in one of the analysis rooms selling books. I bought a pamphlet on the dragon variation (by Dueball I think) and got it signed. I asked him if there was a better way to play the Sicilian defense and he suggested the Najdorf. I actually went 6-1, got a big shiny plastic trophy, and my name in chess life.

At some point the annotations often become interesting. The problem is that we can never predict how much absolute dross we will have to wade through beforehand.

Feb-21-23  victory1: Thanks goodevans..that's really deep for me

Feb-21-23  goodevans: Thanks, <Missy>. That's often what I do.

But other sites, e.g. Lichess, manage to have engine-annotated games where the annotations are trimmed down to those that are actually interesting? Would CG be interested in emulating them?

Feb-21-23  belgradegambit: As <goodevans> points out 36…cxb2 was a mistake. The correct move was 36…f3! .
