Jun-07-20 | | jith1207: <He must be smoking parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.> I don't know about that for someone living in the bridge, but what do I know? |
|
Jun-07-20 | | goodevans: <17...dxe5?> was undoubtedly a mistake and the SF notes to this game give <17...Bb7 18.exf6 exf6 19.f5> as preferable. In this line, though, I'm not so sure 19.f5 is a particularly worrying move. If I were black I'd be more concerned about <19.Bf3> with a view to establishing a piece on d5. With that in mind it's understandable that Mr Walter tried to keep the e-file closed. So whilst SF points to 17...dxe5 as the losing move I feel that black had already sown the seeds of his own destruction by then. Trading off his fianchettoed B may not have been the wisest of choices and failing to castle when he had the chance didn't help either. That said, the way Reti took advantage of black's inaccuracies was both masterly and beautiful. |

 | | AylerKupp: <WorstPlayerEver> Thanks for helping me expand my vocabulary. I didn't know what an "unicum" was so I had to look it up. What I first found was a description of a Hungarian drink described as "an alcoholic, bitter tincture made up of 40 herbs and spices from all across the world. It has a dark color and it tastes quite bitter." And I also found a link to a video of a gal trying Unicum for the first time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pfd.... This video reminded me of the time I had some friends for dinner and afterwards one of them asked me if I had any B&B (Benedictine & Brandy). I said that I didn't, but I that had some straight Benedictine and some Cognac so we could make some B&B by mixing them in equal quantities. I then asked him if he had ever tried straight Benedictine and he said he hadn't, so I poured him some. He made a grimace after tasting it and remarked that it reminded him of the time he drank some carburetor cleaner by mistake. He owned an auto parts store. What does this have to do with chess? Well after playing over some of my games I felt about the same as that gal and my friend did after drinking unicum and Benedictine. So this post is not entirely off-topic. |

 | | AylerKupp: <Diademas> That's what I thought too, although a word other than "sperm" came to mind. But neither were on the list of possibilities. :-) |
|
Jun-07-20 | | jith1207: Not just <One sperm>, it's that one sperm that exists only on stories, that looks like it has a horn growing out of its forehead, as opposed to the tail growing out for all other sperms. It just happens to exist once in a while, but when it does it gives one the rare, perfect and best of the times ever. |

Jun-07-20 | | thegoodanarchist: Alec Berg was a writer on the comedy TV show <Seinfeld>. His name was actually used in one of the episodes. According to his wikipedia page, he is of Swedish descent. He wrote the screenplay for <Eurotrip>, a movie in which he denigrated Bratislava. I visited the wikipedia entry for Bratislava. There are a very large number of photos, which make up a spectacular slide show. They show a city that is a mix of old and new. A vibrant, clean, beautiful city filled with great beautiful architecture, centered on a lovely river front. It's as if the wikipedia entry is there to serve as a rebuttal to Alec Berg. It is a gorgeous city, and the slide show made me want to visit it. I am willing to wager that quality of life in Bratislava is off the hook! The final image in the slide show traces the Danube: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brati... That majestic river originates darn close to where France, Switzerland and Germany meet at one point. |
