Oct-24-08  Billy Vaughan: That's a pretty neat run of tactics starting with 19...Rxh3.
Oct-24-08  notyetagm: Chucky on fire *again*.

Oct-24-08  arsen387: Nice win by Ivanchuk. Notice that if 24.Kb1? then Nc3+!
Oct-24-08  anandrulez: This game was totally complicated .I wonder how Ivanchuk managed to retain the pawns . Nice win , shows who is the real no:2 right now
Oct-24-08  hedgeh0g: What a tactical slugfest. Ivanchuk continues his fantastic form and I didn't understand much of what was going on in this game :P
Oct-24-08  notyetagm: <hedgeh0g: What a tactical slugfest.>

Yes, Ivanchuk is *unbelievably* strong at <TACTICAL PLAY>.

HeMateMe: Being completely isolated in the world didn't work out too well for Napoleon and Hitler.
Mar-01-22  macer75: So this is the response to the Game of the Day I see.
Mar-01-22  macer75: Must say, it feels rather heavy-handed. The title could be cleverer.

Sally Simpson: Still playing politics with the GOTD. Yesterday selection by all accounts was poorly timed. See Karjakin vs Ivanchuk, 2009 Today I think it has been poorly punned.

"Justice for Ukraine"

In 2008 Karjakin was still in the Ukrainian federation, he joined the Russian Fed in 2009 and in this 2008 team event Karjakin played for the Ukrainian team PVK Kiev.

In the same event the Ukrainian Ivanchuk actually played for the Russian team TPS Saransk.

FSR: A good counterpoint to yesterday's very unfortunate choice of GOTD, even though the facts don't really support the pun, as <Sally Simpson> explained.
Mar-01-22  Z truth 000000001: I can just envision <Missy> hunkered down, gleefully absorbing the barrage of withering attacks yesterday, all the while knowing he/she'd spin this pun today.

It might have worked if she/he'd done it before the actual invasion. At this point it falls into the category of shallow gallow humor.

"No, I want to give YOU a pawn."

These guys must be a lot of fun when it's tie to settle the dinner check.

Teyss: We have to give some credit to <MissScarlett> for trying to make amends for yesterday even though she'll deny it. (Yes I decided to avoid the complicated "he/she" and stick to the username.) It's still a game with Karjakin but the title compensates somewhat.

White seemed to have a good attack with a possibility to win the exchange on move 19: 19.Bxe6+ Bxe6 20.Nxe6 Kxe6 21.Rxh8

click for larger view

But then 21...b3! 22.axb3 (else bxa2) Bb4 23.c3 (or Q moves) Rxh8 wins. Hence the retreat 19.Nf1 and White's hopes vanish.

Also I wondered why White played 25.Qb3 going into a lost endgame but the attack is now on Black's side.
If the WQ moves, 25...Nc3!
If the f1 N moves, 25...Nxe3 26.Qxe3 Qa1+ and 27...Rd8+
On other moves, 25...Rc8 threatens b3 or Nc3.

Good game by Chuky.

Mar-01-22  Ironmanth: Good fighting game. Thanks, chessgames. Y'all stay safe out there today.

fredthebear: The war could stop at sunrise, and Ukraine will never receive the justice it deserves.

Bullets are no match for missiles and starvation. This is mass murder and nation stealing. The free world and all its rhetoric watches the unprovoked bully pummel their peaceful neighbor.

The USA is no longer a world leader under turn-a-blind-eye Joek Biden. Madman Putin gave us every warning this was coming, and we let him do it. Under Biden's direction, the USA cut its own oil production to buy Russia's oil and stimulate their economy.

These horrifying events are unthinkable. Political rhetoric does not fix the problem. Damn your big speech bean counter Joek Biden! It won't raise the dead, it won't serve justice. How many must die on your watch???

Mar-01-22  JohnBoy: And <fredthebear> does not miss a chance to turn an international crisis into a domestic criticism. Maybe, during weeks of very clearly stating that Russia was engaged in a massive buildup, the US should have sent the 6th fleet into the Black Sea w/o substantial European support.

Shut up.

igiene: Maybe you didn't understand that Ukraine is only the beginning. Soon Putin will attack other Euopean countries. Perhaps USA needs another Pearl Harbour for awakening.

Teyss: <fredthebear> I generally don't argue with users but you're oversimplifying. Truth is, everybody mishandled Putin for years: Europe, NATO, USA under Biden maybe and under Trump certainly.

The latter played it tough by talking loud and withdrawing from the INF nuclear treaty yet did nothing substantial to contain him. If anything, the INF withdrawal developed Putin's paranoia and gave him an excuse to pretend Russia was threatened: useless and counterproductive.

Would Trump have better handled the present Ukraine conflict? Seeing how he showed his muscles with North Korea and afterwards deflated like a balloon, highly unlikely. I'm not a Biden fan but we cannot blame him for everything.

sakredkow: It does seem there is plenty of blame all around for what has been allowed to happen since Russia ate up Crimea. But I don't think anybody has any illusions now about what Putin's greater goal and that it extends beyond Ukraine.

So far Biden's response to the immediate crisis has been very on point. I don't know what else is expected from the west right now other than to provoke WWIII.

MKD: I am all for Ukraine; not on any moral, legal or ethical ground though it can justified on any or all of those; but because planet IVANCHUK is in Ukraine. I pray for his safety.
