Jan-23-10 | | sfm: It goes to the credit of White that he is not one of them giving up too easily. |
May-07-11 | | samsloan: I believe that this was the last rated game played by Bill Hook before he died. |
May-11-11 | | samsloan: 30. Kg2 was a blunder. I might have been able to hold it with 30. f3 and if 30. ... d3 31. hxg6 with tricky checks threatened with the pawn and bishop. |

 | | OhioChessFan: 30. Bf3 makes more sense. The Bishop guards the Queening square and is self protected from Black's LSB. |

 | | al wazir: Sloan and Hook are both more interesting than this game. |
Oct-25-21 | | catlover: It is good to see comments from Sam Sloan about his play in this game, even if the comments were posted 10 years ago. |
Oct-25-21 | | Granny O Doul: I was never anybody's final opponent, as far as I know. Which is nice because it would mean that no one ever gave up chess just because I beat them. |

 | | perfidious: Towards the end of my playing days, I actually had a CC game adjudicated because my opponent passed on: A Shaw vs V Bellas, 1998. |

 | | FSR: <perfidious> I had a correspondence tournament where two of my six opponents died! In my last correspondence tournament, which I played in just to re-establish my rating and get on back on the USCF's top player list, three of my six opponents withdrew from the tournament. Two withdrew in the early opening, in book positions. One was already dead lost against me and might as well have resigned. One of the two who withdrew in the early opening wrote that he was a Buddhist monk and that his prayer obligations, including requests for prayers from very important people, were so onerous that he didn't have time for the games! |

 | | FSR: I agree with <al wazir> about the game. There are many better games out there that haven't been GOTD. |
Oct-25-21 | | paavoh: @FSR: Another meaning for "dead lost" I gather... |
Oct-25-21
 | | Teyss: <FSR> Great anecdotes, if one can say so about opponents passing away. Love the one about the Buddhist monk. <paavoh> LOL. Note it's correspondence games, not sudden death time control. |
Oct-25-21 | | goodevans: <al wazir>, <FSR>, Agreed. As a rule I'd say that games decided by a very basic blunder shouldn't be GOTD no matter how punable the players' names are. |
Oct-25-21
 | | Teyss: <goodevans> Agreed. "Very basic" is accurate because sometimes a blunder can trigger a beautiful combination. |

 | | moronovich: If there were no blunders in chess, we would stop playing the game. |
Oct-25-21 | | The Kings Domain: Gotta love the Grob, so ugly and oh so interesting. |
Oct-25-21 | | goodevans: <moronovich> Yes, but very basic blunders aren't of any interest in much the same way that truisms aren't. |
Oct-25-21 | | saturn2: g(pawn)rob
cause usually black plays 2...Bxg4 |
Oct-25-21 | | Saniyat24: ooh spiky, beautiful last position, 31...Be4+ turned the game around on its head...! |
