 | | HeMateMe: a bit from wiki, re: Max and cheating
<On two separate occasions in 2017 and 2020, Dlugy was suspected of, and later admitted to, having cheated himself in a Titled Tuesday online tournament run by Chess.com. The incident received renewed attention after Magnus Carlsen referenced it during the Carlsen–Niemann controversy, claiming that Dlugy had previously served as a coach of Hans Niemann.[15][16][17] Later, Vice published an article where chess.com released e-mails showing that Dlugy had confessed to cheating multiple times on chess.com and had to be banned entirely from all events with cash prizes.[18] On October 10, 2022, Dlugy made a lengthy statement denying that he had done any actual cheating, defending Niemann, and denying any involvement with Niemann's game.[19][20]> A vibrating shoe device...couldn't you make more money with that at the blackjack tables in las vegas than at a chess tournamnent? |

Dec-18-24 | | goodevans: I didn’t see the point of Black’s 25...Bd7; Ba4; Bc2 invasion but at least from there the bishop was able, a few moves later, to do a little dance around his queen (31...Bd1; Be2; Bd3). I don’t think either manoeuvre gave White much to think about. |
|
Dec-18-24 | | goodevans: As far as I can see, the only way to avoid immediate mate would have been to decline the R with 36...Qb6+ 37.Kh1 Ne8 but then after 38.Qxh4+ Black would have been forced to give up his Q. <BxChess: <DaltriDiluvi:> 37...Rg8 38. Qxg7# is quicker...> You might want to check that. ;o) |

Dec-18-24 | | areknames: Pretty clever pun if you ask me. |

Dec-18-24
 | | OhioChessFan: Awful pun. |

 | | MissScarlett: Let us compromise and agree that it's awfully clever. I come, however, to solicit further Yuletide puns. The harvest, so far, has been a meagre one. |
|
Dec-18-24 | | whiteshark: really FUBAR pun |
|
Dec-18-24 | | BxChess: <MissScarlett> Are you calling my pun meagre? |
|
Dec-18-24 | | belgradegambit: I know real players like perfidious often mention encounters with a player in the GOTD. A patzer like myself can rarely do that but in the final round of a tournament in 1980 I played Dlugy with the Black pieces and drew which gave me third place and $300. |
|
Dec-18-24
 | | perfidious: Well done; Dlugy was already quite strong then as I recall. |

Dec-19-24 | | stone free or die: Here's another meager nugget:
J Kho vs D Kagramanov, 2010 <Christman knight gifts ring Jingle Bells> or somesuch. |

Dec-31-24 | | BxChess: Eleven days late but I finally get the pun. |
|
Dec-31-24 | | Mayankk: White Rook is en prise but does it really matter? 36 Qg5 Qxa1+ 37 Kh2 allows a Rook capture with check but now Black is staring at a quick mate in all the variations I could see. A) 37 ... Rg8 38 Qxh4+ Kg6 (38 ... Nh5 39 Qxh5#) 39 Ne7# B) 37 ... Ne8 38 Qh5+ Kg8 39 Ne7#
C) 37 ... g6 38 Qh6+ Kg8 39 Qg7#
etc. |
|
Dec-31-24 | | mel gibson: That was easy.
Stockfish 17 says mate in 20 but Black declines the Rook: 36. Qg5
(36. Qg5 (1.Qg5 Qb6+ 2.Kh1 Ne8 3.Qxh4+ Qh6 4.Nxh6 gxh6 5.Qe7 Kg7 6.Qxe5+ Kg8 7.Kh2 Ng7 8.Ra7 Ne8
9.Qe7 Kg7 10.e5 Bg6 11.f4 Bc2 12.f5 Kg8 13.Ra8 h5 14.Qg5+ Kh7 15.Qxh5+ Kg7
16.f6+ Nxf6 17.Qg5+ Kh7 18.exf6 Bg6 19.Rxf8 Bb1 20.Qg7+) +M20/65 455) if I force SF to accept the Rook as per the game it's mate in 4. 36. .. Qxa1+
37. Kh2 Nxg4+
(1. ... Nxg4+ 2.fxg4 Qg1+ 3.Kxg1 g6 4.Qh6+ Kg8 5.Ne7+) -M4/245 White wins _ mate in 4. |

 | | takebackok: Half think Tuesday, after 36. Qg5 no stopping gg. |
|
Dec-31-24 | | stacase: Worse than yesterday
[To self, "Well it's supposed to be dummy!"]
I flailed around looking at all sorts of moves that didn't lead to a quick mate and finally noticed that 36.Qg5 threatened mate and nothing could be done to stop it. 36...Qxa1+ was a spite check or a hope that White would somehow screw up. |
|
Dec-31-24 | | cocker: 36 Kh2 first also wins easily |
|
Dec-31-24
 | | Teyss: Would I have found it if it hadn't been GOTD two weeks ago? Let's assume so. <stacase> ;) |
|
Dec-31-24 | | saturn2: Qg5 threatens Qxh4 then Ne7 and second Qg7. Black can take the Ra1 but then it is over |
|
Dec-31-24 | | stacase: <Teyss: Would I have found it if it hadn't been GOTD two weeks ago? Let's assume so.
<stacase> ;)> Thanks for the winky but my short search on GOTD doesn't find much that fits unless it's: Slang for, "Get On That Drank" some college slang about drinking too much C2H6O |
