GrahamClayton: Smith's premature opening of the centre with 4...d5? is quickly refuted by Burns. 13...f5 loses a piece to 14. ♘xd6++, while 14...♗xb2 loses to 15. ♘xf6+ ♔d8 16. ♖b1, and the bishop can't retreat due to 17. ♖b8#.
Sep-09-14  morfishine: 110 years later and at the sprightly age of 152, Smith erased the pain of this defeat with this sparkling miniature: R Smith vs C Tichenor, 1982

Aug-22-15  optimal play: <<<<INTERCOLONIAL CHESS MATCH.

VICTORIA. V. NEW SOUTH WALES.>

The third of these annual contests between the colonies was played by telegraph on Saturday, 9th November 1872>

BOARD 7. -

Mr. Smith encountered the strongest of the Victorians, Mr. Burns; and the latter having the move played the Scotch Gambit.

Although almost all anticipated the final result of this game, everyone was surprised at the poor stand made by Mr. Smith, who opened his game very badly, whereas his opponent did just the reverse.

The result was that the Sydney player resigned at the 17th move.

- Australian Town and Country Journal (Sydney, NSW) issue Saturday 23 November 1872 page 20>

Board No. 7. —

It is difficult to say anything about this game, as it is hardly worthy of the name of a game of chess so far as the Sydney champion was concerned.

Mr. Smith unfortunately consented to play while labouring under considerable excitement, arising out of some misunderstanding that occurred before the match, and he was consequently no match for Mr. Burns.

- The Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser (NSW) issue Saturday 28 December 1872>

Aug-22-15  optimal play: Smith errs with 6...bxc6?

Mr Burns says "Excellent"!

  FSR: Black should play 6...Qxd1+! 7.Kxd1 a6! 8.Ba4 Bd7 with equality (0.00, Komodo 13.01 64-bit, depth 29). Cf. Nimzowitsch's Sicilian line 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 d5?! 5.Bb5 dxe4 6.Nxc6 Qxd1+ 7.Kxd1 a6 8.Ba4 Bd7. In Burns-Smith, Black has played 2...e5, which helps him develop, rather than 2...c5, which doesn't.
