Dec-04-12
 | | scormus: Now what? .... Bd4 maybe |
Dec-04-12 | | Marmot PFL: Seems that the sacrifice was more intuition than calculation, as black doesn't seem to have a plan ready here. |
Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: <scormus: OMG, he went for it! 18 ... Qxa3, the streetfighter's choice.> Now, Gawain needs a "WiseBud" too! :D |
Dec-04-12
 | | scormus: Blimey, maybe I should stop giving advice ..... |
Dec-04-12 | | Ulhumbrus: Black's N on c6 is ready to invade d4. |
Dec-04-12 | | lost in space: plang: <I would play 20...Bc2 and hope for the best.>
My gut tells me not to give up that bishop just to win the b-pawn. Mr. Jones agrees with you...and he has a higher rating than me . :-) |
Dec-04-12
 | | plang: If not for 22 f4 I think Black had a repetition but 22 f4 does create some weaknesses. |
Dec-04-12 | | haydn20: 23. Kh2 and I don't see that Black has anything. |
Dec-04-12 | | norami: Sac a queen to Carlsen? Hey, why not? What's he got to lose? |
Dec-04-12 | | Marmot PFL: This may be the game that puts Carlsen #1 all time on the FIDE list, so it good that it's a sharp fight. |
Dec-04-12 | | Ulhumbrus: <norami: Sac a queen to Carlsen? Hey, why not? What's he got to lose?> Good point. Better to give battle than to roll over. At least this way he has a chance. |
Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: The problem for Gawain was: He didn't understand (t)his position. Pity! |
Dec-04-12 | | Ulhumbrus: 24...Bc2 or 24...Bd3 clears the square f5 for the N on d4 |
Dec-04-12
 | | Fusilli: I like black. I think the material is comfortably compensated for at this point. White's knight is pretty tied up and it is white who needs some reorganizing of his pieces. I am not sure how to continue with the black pieces... probably try to avoid piece exchanges (for example, ...Bd3 now) until he can capture the b3 at no positional cost, leaving the c4 as the next target. |
Dec-04-12
 | | plang: Perhaps 24..Bc2 followed by 25..Rfa8!?
Exchanging that bishop looks good for Carlsen |
Dec-04-12 | | Marmot PFL: provoking 22 f4 was probably a mistake as white can use f5 later to break up black's king side. But black needed to gain some time. |
Dec-04-12
 | | Fusilli: self correction: Bd3 allows b4. |
Dec-04-12 | | Marmot PFL: McShane also gave up queen, for rook, knight and pawn, but I think he is losing. |
Dec-04-12 | | kellmano: Now 25....Be3 perhaps. The trouble as I see it is that B;ack's rook is loose on a3 so it will be inconvenient to capture on b3 |
Dec-04-12 | | Cemoblanca: "Live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse!" ~ Turkish proverb ;) |
Dec-04-12
 | | Fusilli: <kellmano> If you mean 25...Bd3, 26.b4 looks strong. |
Dec-04-12
 | | scormus: Fusilli: yes, certainly B should avoid exchanging his active pieces. I wasnt sure if .... Bd3 or ... Bc2, but I'd have reckoned one or the other. As for having a plan .... in a streetfight you dont. |
Dec-04-12 | | Ulhumbrus: 25...Kh8 unpins the g pawn and makes possible ...h5. Besides, Fischer quotes Tarrasch saying <When you don't know what to do, wait for your opponent to get an idea. It's sure to be wrong!> |
Dec-04-12
 | | plang: It's possible that 18..Qa3!? was sound but proving it against Carlsen when you are in time pressure is another matter. |
Dec-04-12
 | | moronovich: <Cemoblanca: "Live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse!" ~ Turkish proverb ;)> "It is better to be lucky than dead" |
