Mar-15-13 | | Eyal: In a short interview after the game, Carlsen agreed with Christian Bauer's comment (and the comp evaluation) quoted earlier about 11.cxd5 being probably White's last chance to get some initiative and really fight for an advantage. |
Mar-15-13 | | SugarDom: Eljanov-So was better, we didn't need to waste 2 hours watching. :) |

 | | chancho: It's Rd 1 of a 14 rounder, so I'll cut the players some slack. |

 | | perfidious: Was there a prop for Carlsen making a clean score in this event? |
Mar-15-13 | | VargPOD: Ah, Bogo-Indian, one of Ulf Andersson's favourite openings. No wonder this ended in a quiet draw. |
Mar-15-13 | | Jaburu: The high point of this game is the final position absolutely symmetrical, a painting! |
Mar-15-13 | | beenthere240: The final position is a joke, as was the game. |
Mar-15-13 | | DrAttitude: What is the advantage of 9 tempos in a king versus king endgame? Draw! |
Mar-15-13 | | lost in space: Looks like an uninspired Leko game were he is playing against himself. |
Mar-15-13 | | ajile: Wow what an exciting game.

Mar-15-13 | | notyetagm: Aronian vs Carlsen, 2013 Wow, completely toothless opening by White. Aronian got *zero* advantage from the opening. Big disappointment. |
Mar-15-13 | | fgh: <beenthere240>: So are you, airhead. |
Mar-15-13 | | JohnBoy: CG - please delete the above comment by <fgh> as well as this. Enough with the ad hominems. |
Mar-15-13 | | fgh: <JohnBoy>: Why should they? |
Mar-15-13 | | notyetagm: <lost in space: Looks like an uninspired Leko game were he is playing against himself.> A draw fetishist's fantasy: Leko vs Leko. :-) |
Mar-15-13 | | fgh: This game was good - solid play by both players, which leads to a draw. No surprise. If you can't accept that draws are a part of chess, then I suggest you devote your free time to following a different sport/game. |
Mar-15-13 | | Reisswolf: In the post-game interview Aronian said something about getting careless at some point. Does anyone know what he was referring to? Did he miss an obvious strong continuation at some point? |
Mar-15-13 | | Mr. Bojangles: <notyetagm: Aronian vs Carlsen, 2013
Wow, completely toothless opening by White. Aronian got *zero* advantage from the opening.> If black plays correctly, white is not supposed to get anything out of an opening. DUH! |

chancho: Aronian is so comfortable in his skin when he is talking to others.

Yet to meet someone comfortable in another person's skin while talking. |

 | | eternaloptimist: a perfectly symmetrical position at move 31 = draw by agreement...a boring game. Although I can't blame them for being cautious in their 1st game. |
Mar-15-13 | | beenthere240: The more you play the game over, the more depressing it gets. The only admirable feature is how they seem to conspire to arrange at the final symmetrical position. As far as draws being part of chess -- that's an old argument but this game does not shed light on it. 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. Ng1 Ng8. Draw agreed. |
Mar-15-13 | | Ezzy: A slight indication that the game was dull is when Carlsen and Pein talk for 10 minutes about the upcoming Norwegian Supertournament, and 5 seconds about the game itself. Better things to come though. Let's call today 'A warm up.' |
Mar-15-13 | | WiseWizard: Magnus opening play here is immaculate, it is really beautiful in its precision. Aronian had no choice but to liquidate. I got great satisfaction from watching this game (over and over) because of black's opening. The clarity is what I love. Is the rest of his preparation this perfect? Is this how he plays when he prepares correctly? Is it even possible to play a decisive game only playing perfect clean moves like this? I mean Qe7, Rd8, Nd7, dxc, c5, Qxc5, b5, Bb7. Each one of these moves has a perfect, clear idea not one degree of ambiguity. I feel like he is showing great respect to the game by playing so professionally and he is worthy of competing against Anand for the championship. |
