 | | LIFE Master AJ: Not an impressive game ... for either player. However, (historically); it is rare for the first game to be a a win in the first match. |
|
Nov-10-13
 | | Domdaniel: <LMAJ> Not exactly 'rare' -- Fischer lost the 1st game vs Spassky in '72, and won the 1st game (brilliantly) in the rematch 20 years later. Kasparov won the first game vs Short, on time in a dubious position. And so on. |

 | | tpstar: Magnus: "I *told* them I was too sexy for this shirt!" <Carlsen just removed his billboard, but he had another one beneath it.> Ha! Great to see <arielbekarov> again. =) |

Nov-10-13 | | RubinSteinitz: Since I live in the Southwestern U.S., I was up at 2am last two mornings for the match which started at 2:30am. I do not regret it one bit. If you are a true chess lover, it doesn't matter what time it is; it is always time for chess! I am a stage 4 cancer survivor (cancer in fall of 2011) and could relate to Carlsen's dropping pieces. He must have been just a touch nervous. Neuropathy from heavy chemo last year is why I drop things though. It is frustrating either way. I have no complaints about how this match is starting out. I just enjoy the ambience and excitement of a World Championship chess match. I was upset though about all the commotion that interrupted the play at the first of round 2; that should never happen after the clocks have started. |

I am a stage 4 cancer survivor (cancer in fall of 2011)> Good man. 😃
My old man's just been given his 5yr all clear, and at one point the doctors told him it was pretty hopeless. Never give up ✌ |

Nov-11-13 | | weisyschwarz: It is like a boxing match, the first few rounds are uneventful, each feeling the other's presence and prowess. Game three will be different, I believe. |
|
Nov-11-13 | | RubinSteinitz: Thank you MarkFinan :) I am so happy for your father. :) I am cancer free at this point and docs feel confident that I will stay that way. But talk about being dipped down the whale' s mouth! I didn't expect to live another year having stage 4. A close brush with death teaches quickly to appreciate each day. Have a great day my friend! |
|
Nov-11-13 | | RubinSteinitz: You know, I would love to hear what Spassky thinks of all this. |
|
Nov-11-13 | | larsson89: boring start as expected |

 | | offramp: Let us look back at the days when Anand had a ghost of a chance. Carlsen, in retrospect, started the match slightly nervously. The players reached this position, after MC played 12.Bc1.

Anand played 12...Nd5 and the game was drawn in just 4 more moves.
A better move mentioned by GM Gormally would have been 12...Qa5, attacking the knight on c3. The following mini-contest might ensue:
13.Qb3 Be6 14.Qc2.

And now how about 14...Rad8 15.Rb1 b5 16.Ng5 ?
Well that looks pretty level to me - I suppose there might be better moves than I have conjectured. |

Nov-17-13 | | Jaidip: Chess means Diverse Chess means vastness Chess means Variety. Hiding behind opening preparation is not good. This attitude doesn't support the perspective of chess. A great player should go all out with the flow of chess. Here Vishy misused the opportunity to sqeeze white |
|
Nov-20-13 | | Chess Magician: Carlsen has never shown such preparations in any tournament. I think Kasparov might be helping carlsen otherwise he could not have been so well prepared in openings. |
|
Nov-20-13 | | john barleycorn: < I think Kasparov might be helping carlsen otherwise he could not have been so well prepared in openings.> He bought him a new pair of shoes...hahaha. |

<Have no fear, Captain Hindsight is here!> |

Dec-07-13 | | grasser: Ya think maybe the Tea gets in the way of concentration? Part of your brain does not want to spill the Tea. So you need to come to the board clean. Watch, Ring and Jacket off. 100% Cotton clothing. No static inducing polyester. |
|
Mar-12-14 | | yureesystem: Anand makes an easy draw, Magnus needs to play more sharp against a high 2700 FIDE rated player. |
|
Mar-17-14 | | dunamisvpm: Today's Number one chess player in the world, super GM Magnus Carlsen, considered the Mozart of chess. |

 | | fredthebear: Here's a link with good coverage of the event: https://www.thechessdrum.net/blog/2... I could not get the official website of the 2013 match to function. For those who search elsewhere for information, take note of the year. These two had a rematch in 2014. Search results often intermix the two. % _ % _ % _ % _
The opening in Game 1 is a Reti/Catalan against a Gruenfeld defense. Any double queen pawn opening cannot be a King's Indian Attack/Defense. The KIA/KID features a (weak, backward...) pawn on d3/d6 preparing an adjacent pawn thrust. Pawn structures matter. |
