Nov-10-13		LIFE Master AJ: Not an impressive game ... for either player. However, (historically); it is rare for the first game to be a a win in the first match.

Nov-10-13		Domdaniel: <LMAJ> Not exactly 'rare' -- Fischer lost the 1st game vs Spassky in '72, and won the 1st game (brilliantly) in the rematch 20 years later. Kasparov won the first game vs Short, on time in a dubious position. And so on.

Nov-10-13		RubinSteinitz: Since I live in the Southwestern U.S., I was up at 2am last two mornings for the match which started at 2:30am. I do not regret it one bit. If you are a true chess lover, it doesn't matter what time it is; it is always time for chess! I am a stage 4 cancer survivor (cancer in fall of 2011) and could relate to Carlsen's dropping pieces. He must have been just a touch nervous. Neuropathy from heavy chemo last year is why I drop things though. It is frustrating either way. I have no complaints about how this match is starting out. I just enjoy the ambience and excitement of a World Championship chess match. I was upset though about all the commotion that interrupted the play at the first of round 2; that should never happen after the clocks have started.

Nov-17-13		offramp: Let us look back at the days when Anand had a ghost of a chance. Carlsen, in retrospect, started the match slightly nervously. The players reached this position, after MC played 12.Bc1. click for larger view Anand played 12...Nd5 and the game was drawn in just 4 more moves. A better move mentioned by GM Gormally would have been 12...Qa5, attacking the knight on c3. The following mini-contest might ensue: 13.Qb3 Be6 14.Qc2. click for larger view And now how about 14...Rad8 15.Rb1 b5 16.Ng5 ? Well that looks pretty level to me - I suppose there might be better moves than I have conjectured.

For those who search elsewhere for information, take note of the year. These two had a rematch in 2014. Search results often intermix the two. % _ % _ % _ % _ The opening in Game 1 is a Reti/Catalan against a Gruenfeld defense. Any double queen pawn opening cannot be a King's Indian Attack/Defense. The KIA/KID features a (weak, backward...) pawn on d3/d6 preparing an adjacent pawn thrust. Pawn structures matter.
