 | | chessgames.com: Welcome to our live discussion of the Carlsen-Karjakin World Chess Championship! Please note that we do not actually know who has the white pieces at this time; we had to take a guess to get this page online. If we guessed wrong we'll update this page accordingly. Games start at 2:00pm New York time. For the full schedule and more information see our Carlsen - Karjakin World Chess Championship (2016) tournament page. |

|
Nov-10-16 | | peristilo: Is there a site to watch free? Please! And please, any site with a countdown? I'm confused about the time. I live in Brazil. |
|
Nov-10-16 | | cro777: Anish Giri: "Media have approached me asking for Carlsen - Karjakin chances. I didn't respond, but after a good thought I now give Karjakin approximately 36.8%." |

Nov-10-16
 | | Keyser Soze: Can't wait..Go Magnus! |

 | | WannaBe: Good luck to both combatants. It's interesting, that in post kibitz' page I'm seeing Macy's shoe ad. |

Nov-10-16 | | cro777: "I have trouble expecting (or predicting) the openings in the match. This makes me even more curious to see what they thought of, in which direction they will go, where they will choose to pose problems. After all, the World Championship matches are the trend-setters and are always breaking new ground in the openings. As for the match strategy, I fear Karjakin will be draw-oriented. Carlsen will most probably stay true to himself, doing what he does best - put pressure on his opponent. I expect Karjakin to use his preparation to defuse Carlsen's attempts at 'getting a game'." (GM Alex Colovic) Opening preparation will play a big role. Both players (and their huge teams) will try to continually surprise the opponent. As GM Jon Ludvig Hammer pointed out, a huge team will be particularly crucial for Karjakin, simply to cover as much ground as possible, anticipating that Carlsen is capable of playing anything. It will be interesting to see in which direction they will go: - Will both players go for the Berlin with black, the safest weapon black has against 1 e4? - 1.d4 has the problem that black has several theoretically very solid openings to counter it. Is it possible to prepare well against them all? - 1.Nf3 has become white's way to play without an advantage but get a position where he knows more. Is this a possible strategy? - 1.c4 was seen as an escape from the Berlin and the diversity of openings after 1 d4, but new ways are needed. Have they found them? |

Nov-10-16 | | cro777: U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero refuses to block chess websites from showing moves!! "Websites showing moves almost as they occur at the World Chess Championship can continue to do so over the objections of the tournament organizers", a judge ruled a day before the tournament is to begin. (ABC News) World Chess US Inc. and World Chess Events Ltd. sued the websites, saying they will take advantage of a $15 live feed of the tournament to relay word of each move over the internet. The lawsuit had also sought $4.5 million in damages. The defendants were Chessgames Services LLC, E-Learning Ltd. and Logical Thinking Ltd. |

 | | chessgames.com: <peristilo: Is there a site to watch free? Please! And please, any site with a countdown? I'm confused about the time. I live in Brazil.> Of course you can watch it right here, or at http://www.chess24.com/, and surely a number of other sites. For a countdown clock, see the official site https://worldchess.com/nyc2016/ — although if my calculations are correct, they are counting down to an opening ceremony one hour before the game. |
|
Nov-10-16 | | cro777: Magnus starts as White!
The drawing of lots has been done. Carlsen will play with the white pieces in the first (and the last) game. The colors shall be reversed after game 6.

 | | HeMateMe: wasn't there some sort of pregame ceremony/dinner Thursday night, as before big tournaments? This is where Bill Gates, Sting, all the other chess jock sniffers can show up and mingle? Heck, that's tradition, isn't it? Are we Americans too lazy to have the dancers and mime artists and musicians, like other countries do? I say we need to pull up our socks, regarding opening ceremonies. |
|
Nov-10-16 | | Gilmoy: After Brexit and Trump ... I cannot rule out Karjakin :o <cro777: The defendants were ... E-Learning Ltd. ...>
That's cute! Chess as education :) We approve of this idea! |

Nov-10-16
 | | WannaBe: <cro777> 1. Nc3, how about that?! (That ad on the right hand side's gone...) Better yet, let's see some 1. b3 or 1. b4 |
|
Nov-10-16 | | cro777: <WannaBe> Karjakin (at the opening press conference): "Of course it’s very important to guess the first move, but we’re all professionals and we have to be prepared against everything." |
|
Nov-10-16 | | The Kings Domain: Fun fun fun. |

 | | offramp: It looks like this will clash with the cricket from India. In London the cricket is on from 4am to 11am, so I am obliged to rise from my pit unseasonably early. |
|
Nov-10-16 | | cro777: <Gilmoy: After Brexit and Trump ... I cannot rule out Karjakin> "From his hotel room in New York, Sergey Karjakin would have noticed all the noise generated by Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton. He would not mind doing a Trump himself, at the World Chess Championship." http://www.sportstarlive.com/chess/... |

 | | WannaBe: Okay, Leicester City. D. Trump. What have UK bookies' have to say about MC/SK match? Someone put £10000000 on SK for me, I'll pay ya. I'm good for it. <Technical draw> will vouch for me. =)) |
|
Nov-11-16 | | alkinoos 3844: If Magnus play at his best level of play, that`s around 2880-2890 Elo, none on this world has more than 5% chances in a set match against him.Maybe even less.
If Magnus play in at his average level (by the way given his record i think he plays above that when it really matters), that`s about 2860 Elo
there are 2 and only 2 players who theoretically have around 20% chances to win a set match against Magnus. That`s Caruana and Aronian and presupposing that they would play at their absolute best level (which by the way under the pressure of playing against Sauron is also very dubious) |

Nov-11-16 | | lost in space: Helau and welcome to the fifth season of the year, welcome to a land were a horror clown was elected, were an other horror clown is just erecting his dictatorship, were a country is tortured to death by the beast of war .... and were these two guys are playing chess. How thrilling. |
|
Nov-11-16 | | WorstPlayerEver: <lost in space> But the horror clown was a democrat. And it teems with dictators around the world nowadays. Which is only natural: survival of the fittest. People's heads are stuffed with poop. And it seems they can't get enough of it; they always get what they want: more poop. The irony. |
|
Nov-11-16 | | lost in space: o yes, she was a horror clown too. Lock at her smile. Just horrifying. Even more horrifying than a chainsaw. Joker like. Poor suckers, you had a chose between 2 horror clowns. |

Nov-11-16
 | | Richard Taylor: In put this on the general discussion but it was interesting to see the press conference. My impressions: Karjakin is very unassuming and almost apologetic. He agreed that Carlsen is the best player in the World. Of course the issue isn't that, it's who wins. But maybe for Karjakin it is also just to have some interesting games and do well. And then as the match goes he can think about winning. To win you have to be prepared to lose. Either some games or to imagine losing the whole match. Then to visualise that one can win. |
|
Nov-11-16 | | virginmind: They should have started at 1 pm, to give Europeans a chance for longer live following. Anyway, good entertainment ahead. Of course Carlsen will win, but with a very narrow margin. |
