Honza Cervenka: The castling in move 8 was probably premature. It only invited black's Kingside attack which was conducted with great force.

Btw, "Kaschau" is Slovak city of Kosice.

Jul-29-08  chocobonbon: I think this was the last time Mieses played this variation of the Vienna. He had "escaped" as White against Schlechter previously with draws. Obviously Asztalos was of a different disposition. Mieses probably thought he was serious until he met Asztalos' mind-set. Speaking as a C-player it occurs to me that Mieses' games might make an excellent negative example of position play. Apparently tactics filled his table. Asztalos knew when to get tactical, like after 8.0-0.
Sep-25-14  domradave: Andy Soltis endorses this line, the Vienna fianchetto, in his E4 system pamphlet. Spassky resorted to it in his Candidates Final match against Korchnoi, since he couldn't counter Korchnoi's French. I have used this line because, especially when Black plays d5, the game is like an English Opening.
Sep-26-14  ughaibu: How can white play the Vienna if black plays the French?
Oct-04-14  domradave: You are right, ughaibu. Korchnoi should have stayed with the French.
Feb-09-21  Stolzenberg: <Honza Cervenka: The castling in move 8 was probably premature. It only invited Black's kingside attack ...> and < chocobonbon: ... Asztalos knew when to get tactical, like after 8. 0-0.>

8. ... h5 looks risky, doesn't it? Instead of 9. h3, Keres recommended 9. d4.

GrahamClayton: Asztalos throws his K-side pawns against Mieses' king.
