Mar-31-18 | | goodevans: 24...Ne4+ is an exquisite move. White has no real alternative but to accept it when <25.Bxe4 Rc7 26.Qa8> (else either 26...Qd4+ or 26...Qf6+ picks up the rook) <26...Rc8 27.Qxc8 Qxc8> gives black a clear endgame advantage. White chose the most straightforwardly bad (and beautiful!) way to decline the N-sac but the other K moves are equally doomed to failure, e.g. <25.Ke1 Rc2 26.Rd1 Qh4+ 27.Kf1 Nd2+> etc. |

Mar-31-18 | | siggemannen: Ra3!!
It's funny how white queen just runs out of squares |
|
Mar-31-18 | | Imran Iskandar: Just fantastic from Vitiugov. Watching live, I thought that Ne4+ would be too tough to find OTB. Notice that after Ra3, all squares on the a7-f2 diagonal are controlled by Black's three pieces and so it forces the White queen to get off said diagonal, allowing the Black queen to give a devastating check on d4. |

 | | Sally Simpson: I'd have gone for Viti-u-gof but am expecting to be corrected. "Succumbing to Philidor's Mate is the worst humiliation that a player can endure at the chess board." Not to sure, but each to their one I guess. To lose such a game is OK. I could see me saying: "Beautiful. let's play it out the mate and put it on the board." Think back rank mate is a more painful way for an experienced player to lose. |
|
Apr-01-18 | | Gregor Samsa Mendel: The one time I got to employ a Philidor's Mate in an actual game (on the internet), my opponent was very sporting and complimented me on my play. I think I realized that I had accomplished all I could chesswise with my limited abilities and stopped playing shortly afterwards. |

 | | Domdaniel: It is not so difficult to pronounce names like 'Vitiugov' - just remember to change certain English-style pronunciations - such as 'j' pronounced 'dj' rather than 'y' - which does not apply here anyway. "Vit-you-gov" is good enough. |
