 | | fredthebear: Magnus Carlsen was the #1 seed of this 206-player tournament. Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa was in a must win situation here. This draw secured first place and the $110, 000 prize money for Carlsen. News Summary: https://worldcup2023.fide.com/en/ne.... The current classical chess world champion Ding Liren did not participate in the event. |

Aug-28-23 | | Ulhumbrus: After 12...Be7 White has castled whereas Black has not. On the other hand Black seems a little ahead in development and it may seem that White can gain little apart from dissolving his d pawn by d5. If White has any advantage because of Black's uncastled king how can he make it count? The computer evaluations and analysis as well as the commentators indicate that Carlsen's move 13 Qf3!! attacks three points at once, namely, the points f5 , d5 and b7. By attacking the B on f5 it ties the e6 pawn to its defence so that the e6 pawn cannot fight the d pawn after d5. By attacking b7 it does all this with tempo so that Black can't defend both f5 and b7. One can learn a thing or two from Carlsen's resource Qf3 about how to handle the isolated d pawn when the opponent has not castled. |

 | | keypusher: An important game given the circumstances, but as far as the game itself goes, funny to see people wasting engine analysis and videotape on it. |

 | | fredthebear: KP obviously didn't bother to review either before commenting, typical of his cronies giving adorned opinions of the previous comment without examining the game itself. Idle posting, not informative. Did KP know that Black has few winning chances against the Alapin isolani in a must win situation? Does KP know that after 14.d5 that Black has tried seven different responses and hasn't won any of them? Of course KP did! He just didn't bother to mention it. |

 | | perfidious: Following 14.d5, it is obvious to this poster--who has never played either colour in this line--that the isolated pawn is going to be liquidated, and that Pragg had no good alternative to temporary acceptance of the weakness at e6; exchanges at d5 would be good for White. Once 16....Kh8 is played, Carlsen had nothing better than the return of the pawn he snatches when; Black's pieces are far too active. <.....Idle posting, not informative....> is, in this instance, the province of the poster who gratuitously attacked <keypusher>'s observation; but neither does he control others' posts or their right to make them. |

 | | fredthebear: There's the unabashed cronyism that we're oh so accustomed to. Regulars know that FTB's perpetual cyberstalker couldn't resist firing his shot at my two comments on the same page. Of course, it's no surprise that the narcistic perp spoke of himself again, as if he's the end all be all to chess here. The big surprise is that perp actually commented on 14.d5 -- specific game discussion is so rare during his bouts of self-promotion and belittling of others. Certainly not as thorough as Ulhumbrus' excellent posts but refreshing compared to the usual perp garble, not at all <people wasting> as the critic KP would have us believe. Folks, don't be fooled by their smoke. This uneventful game is significant to Sicilian trends; masters all over the world are studying it. Such a rare but reachable line in the 2.c3 Alapin variation will continue to be one safe way White plays for a draw to duck the popular Sicilian defense at the upper levels. It met MC's needs with ease to formally cash in. |

 | | fredthebear: Oh, pardon me KP. I'm sorrry I misunderstood. I should have realized that you were being polite when you mocked three members for our posts. From the looks of all the empty game pages hereabouts, most readers who don't have anything informative to say usually just go on about their day without saying a word. In fact, I'm sure there are silent members who DO have something to say but refrain from doing so because the vultures are always looking to make a meal of contributors. Could it be that your polite remarks are more about the target audience than the game itself -- who instead of what?? Do thank your crony on his personal hate forum for politely chipping in to support you, just as I predicted above. You know what they say -- "birds of a feather stick together". |
