tamar: Niemann missed an opportunity to get 3 pawns for a piece with 30 Nxc6 bxc6 31 Rxc6 Rc7 32 Rxa6 which looks decisive because Black has no counterplay to the advance of the qside pawns later.
Feb-24-24  whiteshark: As the hotelier of the tournament, I would now get nervous and activate the "HMN lost" emergency plan prepared for this purpose.
Feb-24-24  goodevans: I wonder if anyone's pointed out <55.Nb3!> to Niemann yet. Better wear body armour and a helmet when you do.

tamar: <whiteshark> Good catch, "Hôtel Fiesta Beach, Djerba", needs to race to that room immediately, and secure all remotes and ironing boards.
Feb-24-24  redcircle: Very entertaining game to say the least. Like him or not, you've got to admire his approach, choosing to avoid theory and enter a queenless middlegame.

The game could have gone either way, it was down to fine details in the endgame. What an endgame it was by the way, minor pieces, rooks and 3 pawns each but on opposite sides. This will be included in chess books in the following years. A classic!

perfidious: The opening is something I might have expected to see when playing at 16-1700 level in the mid-late 1970s.
Feb-24-24  EvanTheTerrible: This opening actually has quite a lot of positional venom. I first saw this line in comments from the person broadcasting the 2021 Reykjavik Open. 3. d3 is the 2nd most common move in master level games and scores significantly better than Nc3 (41% - 38% - 21% vs 34% - 40% - 26% in the lichess database).

The ending to this game reminds me of the last time these two played (Tata Steel Challengers), where Niemann has an advantage, overpresses, and loses in a pawn race.

Honza Cervenka: Maurizzi appears to be a hot candidate for the position of Hans Niemann's Nemesis.
