HeMateMe: 53.g4 seems to be the losing move, opening up white's position to tactics. looked drawn till then.

Clearly a Wagnerian composition...

May-20-25  Andrew Chapman: White could have had a draw by repetition at move 38 - presumably thought he had something more.

Sally Simpson: Yes 53.g4 gave Black tricky chances that paid off. He did well to force White onto a slippy slope here.

The White Queen is overloaded defending the Rook and Bishop. White is in Blunderland with a clock ticking. White has missed after 55. Rf1 Qf2+!

How about 55.Rg3 with Rg8+ Kg8, Qg5+ and mate in the wind. Black has Qh5 or h4+ covering g5 then not sure how it goes but White is a piece up. Nice and messy.

DaltriDiluvi: White probably resigned because the king and pawn endgame after <68.Rxe2 Re8+ 69.Kd2 Rxe2+ 70.Kxe2> is lost.

If I had been White I'd probably continued for a few moves because it's possible for Black to misplay this position:

<70...Kc5 71.Ke3 Kd5? (only Kb5! wins) 72.Kf4! Kc5 73.Ke4! (after Ke5? c6 74.Ke4 Kb6!! Black is winning again - it's really deep stuff) Kb5 74.Kd5> and the pawn on c4 drops.

HeMateMe: Yes, the k+p ending is a tricky exercise in opposition, gaining a move, losing a move.
