  TheAlchemist: You can still go into a King's Indian Attack types of positions, like 2.d3 against the French or Caro-Kann, and even the Sicilian.

So it's not that bad, it was White who made it worse with his play than it actually is. I agree it's not that ambitious, but I still regard it as playable - not on GM level, of course.

So, I think that had White continued with the hypermodern scheme of developement with d3, g3, Bg2, Nf3, Nbd2 he would have been fine. But alas, these schemes had yet to be "invented".
