  beatgiant: Alekhine was probably trying to generate some counterplay such as 28. Qxf5 <Re2>. Then I don't see anything better than 29. Qd3 transposing to the actual game, since 29. b4 Rf8 gives actual counterplay. (Of course the actual game is nothing great for Black, who lost.)
