May-28-17  RookFile: One of the secrets of chess is not to try too hard. Marshall wisely does this and gets a draw against Alekhine.
May-28-17  JimNorCal: Though, to be fair, AA was not a fearsome beast at this time. Was this his first foreign tournament?

Marshall was quite well known in 1910

<Was this his first foreign tournament?> Probably his first major one, but he did play in Duesseldorf 1908.
May-28-17  JimNorCal: Thanks, bg.
I guess this was during the Lasker/Tarrasch WC match.
Jun-01-17  RookFile: Marshall got nothing out of the opening. So, he just made a draw. I think that's the right way to look at this game. You can substitute any other strong player as black and it's the right thing to do.
