GrahamClayton: Sassot had recently been in hospital for an appendectomy, and had to leave his game for a moment. When Alekhine came around to the board and saw Sassot was absent, he ordered that the game was forfeited by Sassot, hence the 1-0 score in a winning position for Black.

Aug-21-12  Petrosianic: What was it, a simul? I don't see how else you could "order" someone forfeited for being away from the board. I don't recall Alekhine playing any serious games in 1928, but the scoresheet doesn't indicate that this game is anything other than Classical.

GrahamClayton: <Petrosianic>What was it, a simul?

<Petrosianic>,
According to "Alekhine in Europe and Asia", the game was part of a 30 board simul on the 24th of January, with Alekhine scoring +21, -7, =2 in a display which lasted 7 hours.

Aug-21-12  Petrosianic: January 1928, that must have been mere weeks after becoming world champion.

I may be perverse, but I'd have made it a 34 board simul.

It may have been too soon for the champ to hear the number 34 again.

Alekhine played no serious chess in 1928 and in 1929 only one tournament (Bradley Beach), which he won with 8.5/9, and the match with Bogoljubov.

Sep-29-15  TheFocus: From a simultaneous exhibition in Barcelona, Spain on January 24, 1928.

Alekhine scored +21=2-7.
