plang: This is game one of their second round match in the WC tournament. In the first round Svidler had a bye while Adianto had defeated Wang Zili. After drawing the second game to clinch the match Svidler went on to defeat Epishin by the same score in the third round before losing to Adams in the fourth round in the tie-breaks. 16..Ne4 is an idea of Timmans, an alternative to the more "normal" 16..Bf8. Black gives up the two bishops but interferes with white's kingside build-up. 24 Bf2 was new; Van den Doel had played 24 Bc1 against Timman earlier in 1997. Svidler slowly increased the pressure winning a pawn and opening the position for his two bishops. Svidler pointed out that Adianto may have been counting on 41..Qg5 and then realized that after 42 Qxg5..Nxg5 43 Rd6!..Rxd6
44 exd..Nxe4 45 dxe..Nd6 46 Bd4..Ne8
47 Kg3..f6 48 Kf4..Kf7 49 Ke4..Ke6
50 g4 white has a winning endgame.
