Aug-27-05  chess man: Reshevsky resigns before Botvinnik can play 59...Ra8+. A complicated and enjoyable game between the two great positional chess masters.
May-05-06  Resignation Trap: This game was error-filled.

17...Rxg2 seems natural, but Botvinnik said that 17...Rh8! was better since White would have a hard time holding on to his bishop at f7.

Botvinnik, objectively speaking, should have played 33...Kd7=, but both players were running short of time, and blundering, too!

37...Re6? is definitely inferior to 37...Rg8!

Still blitzing away after the time control, Reshevsky made a childish mating threat 41.Rh1?, overlooking the simple 41...Nb5+. Instead 41.Rb1 leaves White with an extra pawn.

Aug-11-07  wolfmaster: A good game, but erratic, just like <Resignation Trap> said.

plang: 5..Ba5 was almost completely unexplored at the time. This was the first game where 6 Qg4 was played; 6 b4 had been played in a previous game and remains the most popular choice. 9 Qxg7?!, giving up the e-pawn, has not been repeated; 9 Nf3 has been played in a few games. White could have saved the h-pawn with 20 h4..Rh8 21 Bg5..Rh7 22 Bxe7..Rxf7 23 Bg5..Bxc2 but Black would have had the winning chances. 36 Rc7+ would have led to a near certain draw but Reshevsky continued to play for a win (as did Botvinnik). Botvinnk could have punished Reshevsky's 41 Rh1? with 41..Nc8+ 42 Rxc8..Rxc8 43 Rh8+..Kd7 44 Rxc8..Kxc8 45 c4..Rc6 46 c5..Rf6 and wins but he missed it. 51 Bb4? was not possible due to 51..Rc7+ 52 Ka8..Ra6+ 53 Kb8..Rb6+ 54 Ka8..Kc8 and mates. Reshevsky missed a second clear drawing opportunity with 43 Rh8+..Kd7 44 Rh7+..Re7 45 Rxe7+..Kxe7 46 Bxc7..Rd7 47 Kc6..e4 48 Bf4..Ke6 49 Be3; instead after his $3 Bxc7? his king remained vulnerable which Botvinnik masterly took advantage of.

A typically uncompromising Winawer struggle.
