Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-11-10  kereru: What happened here, did Botvinnik lose on time? He was better for most of the game and final position looks drawn to me.
Sep-11-10  turkish tickler: In Botvinnik's 100 greatest games, he explained that at the end here, he just wanted to get some food.

p.297 " I saw the position as being unclear and thought about playing it out. However I really wanted a sandwich and the deli closed in 10 minutes."

Jan-28-15  zydeco: This isn't like Botvinnik. He's ahead two pawns and loses??
Sep-24-16  N.O.F. NAJDORF: I don't understand why Botvinnik played 35 ... e5

  stoy: Botvinnik has two pawns for a bishop here, he is not two pawns ahead.

  perfidious: <stoy: Botvinnik has two pawns for a bishop here, he is not two pawns ahead.>

Sure he was, before coming unstuck towards the finish.

Feb-04-19  N.O.F. NAJDORF: I agree that the final position looks drawn.

Why didn't Botvinnik play 66 … Qf5+,

offer Damjanovic a draw, which he would probably have accepted, and THEN visit the deli?

  keypusher: The final position is definitely not drawn. If 66....Qf5+ 67.Kh4 and the h-pawn goes.

Earlier 35....e5 was fine if followed up by 36....Qc7.

<In Botvinnik's 100 greatest games>

Even if that book hadn't ended in 1946, this was not a likely candidate...
