Retireborn: An interesting last round battle from the monster tournament. Colle was one of the first masters to play Alekhine's defence at a high level.

Nowadays 11.d5! would be mainstream but I cannot find any games with it until the 60s. With 11.c5 & 13.b4 Marshall is apparently repeating a plan used in

Tartakower vs S Takacs, 1926

although I cannnot say for sure if he'd seen that game.

22...d4 is an imaginative pawn sacrifice for the initiative that may not be entirely correct. He may have been afraid of 22...Qd7 23.Rxc6, but it seems that after 23...Rxc6 24.Ne5 Bxe2 25.Qxe2 Qe6 26.Nxc6 Qxc6 Black has no serious problems.

Black avoids the trap 24...Bxe2 25.Rxg7+! Kxg7 26.Bxd4+ f6 27.Qxe2 Qxd4 28.Qxe7+ Rf7 29.Qd6 Qxd6 30.cxd6 Rd7 31.Rd1 when the rook ending is if not lost at least awkward for him.

After 32.g3 Qd4! it soon becomes clear that White cannot keep the extra pawn. Marshall could have kept the game going with 32.Qc8+ Kh7 33.Qc4 but I'm not sure if his winning chances are at all real - would welcome opinions from stronger players here.
