keypusher: <An amusing quote about this game from Reinfeld's tournament book: "There is a certain school of chess theorists which flatly asserts that such dull games can arise only from 1 P-Q4.">

Taken from this marvellous website on the Cambridge Springs 1904 tournament: http://home.wi.rr.com/etzel/cs1904....

Oct-22-09  ughaibu: The position at move 21 is quite interesting, I think. This kind of game may have been instrumental in the development of the kings indian!?
Oct-22-09  whiteshark: <instrumental in the development of the kings indian> You mean how to get rid of the DSB w/o fianchetto?
Oct-22-09  ughaibu: I hadn't thought of that, double interesting then.

keypusher: Looks like a bog-standard Steinitz defense to the Ruy Lopez to me (with ...a6 thrown in, and White taking two moves to play d4). Trading off the bishop on e7 was standard too. Lasker played ...c6 to drive off the knight and accepted a slight weakness on d6 in return -- nothing remarkable about that either.
