Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-30-04  Knight13: White wins the rook. That was a good move. Good game.
Feb-16-05  Gowe: 33. A4!!, wonderful move, great way to win a difficult match.
Feb-16-05  iron maiden: 39...a3 40. Rb3 a2 41. Ra3 stops the pawn and retains the rook.
Apr-14-06  IMDONE4: h4 was a great move rather than the terrible Nf3 he played against Keres. However, Benko also made some severe mistakes later on that caused him to lose the game after several concessions on the queenside and the fatal mistake of allowing white's rook the open b file.
Dec-17-06  refutor: any thoughts on 16. ...Nde5 as an alternative?
Oct-15-07  D4n: 35. Rb+ pretty crafty.

  kingscrusher: Benko has a sense of humour in joining the Russians to test Fischer in this variation of the Caro-Kann!
Nov-08-19  pepechuy: Did Fischer really play 38. Kh1? (it is a question, I am not implying it is a bad move).

In "The best endings of Capablanca and Fischer", it is 38. Kg1.

Nov-08-19  Olavi: The tournament book by Gligoric/Ragozin and a Yugoslav Fischer collection have 38.Kh1.

  Chessmaletaja: The position after <31 ♕f4>:

click for larger view

My chess engines are saying that the position is absolutely equal.

Benko made a mistake <31...♖a8? 32 ♖h1! ⩲>

Then, Benko blundered <32...♖g8?? 33 a4!+->

Note that after <32...♖xa3 33 ♕b8!> Black is also lost.

Black had to play

<31...e5! 32 ♕f5+ ♔d6=>

For example:

<33 ♕c8 ♔c5=> or <33 ♖h1 ♖xa3=>

Aug-25-25  Cecco: Understandably, <pepechuy> wondered whether Fischer really played 38. Kh1. Even though the position is still winning for White, he can't afford to keep his king on h1. He might as well immediately play 38. Kf1.

  takebackok: Playing 38. Kh1 is like saying resign already up a rook and black can't threaten or create anything.

  HeMateMe: You can't go wrong with Bob as GOTD.

I thought black looked better after 30 moves. White's a pawn looked weak and it seemed Benko could penetrate on the Queen side.

Of course, I'm not a Grandmaster...

  offramp: Today's pun is <Rookrolling>, based on the interesting pastime of "Rickrolling".

<Severus6> used to post a series of links across <chessgames.com>, ending with a YouTube link. <That> was a video of Rick Astley singing <β™«All Men Are Liarsβ™«>. Very funny!

I heard that User: severus6 almost died of laughter so she took the veil and relocated to Kabul.

<Severus6> hasn't posted since 2013. Very very very few people remember <Rickrolling>.

  offramp: Fischer did not like London and came here very rarely. Bit like Elvis.

He gave an interview to Jonathan Penrose in his (i.e. Fischer's) hotel room.

Penrose was surprised that Fischer liked UK TV.

He really liked <Les Dawson>, but he <LOVED> the show called <Tenko> (the series about female British prisoners during WWII).

<PENROSE>: I haven't seen it.
<BOBBY FISCHER> (π’»π‘œπ“‡ 𝒾𝓉 π’Ύπ“ˆ 𝒽𝑒): You haven't seen it? You haven't seen <Tenko>? There's a load of kung-fu in it. I'm a grandmaster of kung-fu. Did you know that? I'm a grandmaster of chess and kung-fu yeah!
<PENROSE>: Sadly, kung-fu has not invaded my consciousness to the same extent unto which it has invaded yours.
<BOBBY FISCHER>: OK, put this rook on the limey's <[i.e. Penrose's]> head and I'll knock it right off. Ready?
<BOBBY FISCHER> kicks <JONATHAN PENROSE> in his gooch.

Luckily, the BBC recorded all of that.

Aug-25-25  Freelance Assassin: 33... bxa4?? is absolutely suicidal. Why open up a file for White's Rook and give him a mating net?
Aug-25-25  drleper: Haha <38.Kh1>, if that's real then Fischer had a sense of humour :P

<Cecco: Understandably, <pepechuy> wondered whether Fischer really played 38. Kh1. Even though the position is still winning for White, he can't afford to keep his king on h1. He might as well immediately play 38. Kf1.> Not only can he afford it, after 38.Kh1 he's obliged to win the game using the rook and pawns only (if black plays on). White must play according to the constraints of the position, and therefore never move the king from its optimal square (h1)!!

  HeMateMe: I can see both Bob and Donald Trump singing the Temptations songs, perhaps trying high falsetto like lead singer david Ruffin or Eddie Kendricks.

I'm thinking Bob could do the dance steps better than Trump. Much better.
