Chessical: <25...Nf8> holds the position. As played, Janowski walks into a mating net.

  perfidious: <Chessical: <25...Nf8> holds the position....>

Not so far as I can see; this is met by 26.h6, when there is no antidote to 27.Qf6 and ruination, though in humdrum fashion compared to the actual finish.

Chessical: <Perfidious > I believe that after <25...Nf8> 26.h6 then <26...f5> would be an adequate response.
Sep-16-20  Retireborn: Chessbase 2002 has a different move order (16.Rg3 c5 17.Bg5 c4 18.Bxe7 Rxe7 19.Bf1 Rc7 20.Qf4 Rb8 21.Qg3) as well as a different final move (30.Qe7+)

On the one hand this changes 17.Bg5 c4 from mistakes into normal moves; on the other hand I don't trust Chessbase not to have mangled the score.

One wonders if this score is from Yates' book and he misremembered what happened? Can anyone clear this up?

Sep-16-20  Retireborn: <Chessical> Thanks. Are there any annotations? Does Yates acknowledge that 17.Bg5 loses a piece?

Looks as if some bright spark "improved" the game. Wonder who it was.

Chessical: <Retireborn> The notes to this game are by IM William Winter (Yates annotated 30 games used in this book before his death).

<17. Bg5> "Correct strategy. With the exchange of Bishops, White intensifies his opponent's weaknesses."

As to Janowski's response, "Better to retire the Queen."

Sep-17-20  Retireborn: <Chessical> Thanks again.
