Apr-24-06  Whitehat1963: Yeah, you're right <Jim Bartle>, Nash did play about like 5-year-old in this one, so it's not surprising.
Apr-24-06  Jim Bartle: And talk about stereotyping: Nash was white, Jordan black...
Apr-24-06  DP12: Runemaster White normally would play in this way against inferior opponents. By the way, to my eyes the best response to Qh4+ is Ke2.
Apr-24-06  AlexandraThess: This game explains why it is called King's Gambit, hehehee
May-06-06  CapablancaFan: Interesting...a guy who plays like this (Nash) ends up U.S. Chess Federation Scholastic Director! http://www.uschess.org/news/press/u...

monopole2313: What a coincidence - Jim Jordan also worked for USCF.
Apr-25-07  Judah: <<Runemaster>:Could someone please post the links to the other games with the Tumbleweed opening - I'm curious to see how White achieves an 80% score with such a weird opening!>

Nov-01-09  TheTamale: The king is a fighting piece! Unfortunately, he's not a very good fighter...
Nov-01-09  YoungEd: The Nash Rambler crashes.
Sep-02-11  joshuap: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Kf2? No wonder I've never haerd of the tumbleweed. Maybe white accidentally toutched his king. 3...Qh4+ 4.Kf3?? This just plain loses. Maybee white accidentally moed his king To f3 also! That would be a very unlucky coicedence! Honestly, I think Kf3 was just an unfortunate blunder. 4...Qh5+ and black wins.
Aug-23-13  Conrad93: 3. Kf2?? loses on the spot to 3...Qh4+ 4. g3 fxg3 5. Kg2 gxh2 6. Rxh2 Qxe4+ 7. Nf3 and now black can 7. Bd6!. Black should be able to easily reach a winning endgame after trading material.
Aug-23-13  Shams: <Conrad> After 8.Rh4 how does Black force pieces off?

There are many ways for White to lose with this setup; I have found ...b6/Bb7 to be the most convincing.

Aug-23-13  Conrad93: 8...Qg4+, Shams, is the winning move.
Aug-23-13  Shams: <Conrad93> That move just drops the queen.
Aug-25-13  Conrad93: You aren't seriously going to argue that white has a solid or defensible position are you?

8...Qg6+ 9. Kh1 Nh6 and all black has to do is trade pieces.

Aug-25-13  Conrad93: 9....Ne7 is even more solid.
Aug-25-13  Shams: Of course White is losing; I said as much. If you like we can even name the refutation after you. 8...Qg6+ has been played many times before (at least three times against me in blitz) but that hardly matters for naming rights.
Aug-25-13  Conrad93: Basically almost any move works. White doesn't have any compensation for the weakened kingside after black castles.
Aug-25-13  Conrad93: I think more solid is what Steinitz use to play. 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. d4!? Qh4+ 4. Ke2.
Aug-25-13  Conrad93: Actually, does black even have to play 3. Qh4+?

Black could just play normal developing moves and still get a good position.

Aug-25-13  Shams: 3...Qh4+ is by far the best move; if Black plays anything else then it really is a game again (although still dubious for White as he did give up an important pawn on move 2.) White castles by hand or not at all in many KGA lines, so his King is not *that* bad on f2 after he gets in Nf3.
Aug-25-13  Conrad93: Shams, but after the pawn genocide by black, white has no way to recover in the endgame.

He will be stuck with a weak kingside and very few pawns, so I don't see how white has such a huge winning percentage.

Maybe the opponents were just starting out.

Aug-25-13  Shams: <Conrad93> I think that's probably it. Strong players don't play this way in serious games. Also, the sample size is small, and there is probably selection bias: White playing this way and losing is just ordinary, but winning with it is much more notable, so the latter games are more likely to find their way into databases.

You might kick the tires with it in blitz sometime. Of course it's terrible, horrible, no good and very bad, but if Black is imprecise White's advantage in activity can lead to a lot of fun for the first player.

Just don't tell your mother you play this crap. :)

Aug-26-13  Conrad93: Well, Shams, it's a bit too late too late for that. I already told her I play chess.
Aug-30-23  EvanTheTerrible: Encyclopedia en passant.
