Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-24-03  refutor: 16.g3 aiming to get Bf4 in. once stein opens the d-file he gets a fairly simple draw. i play this move order of the caro-kann myself with an early ...Qc7 to stop Bf4 which can really affect Black's development.

gezafan: White is somewhat better here and should have played on.
Sep-11-24  Petrosianic: It's actually about dead even.

perfidious: The Caro-Kann was an unusual choice by Korchnoi in the 1960s, and would not be seen again in his praxis until the difficulties he experienced in the French vs Karpov's 3.Nd2 in their 1978 title match.

Sep-11-24  Petrosianic: Yeah, I assume it means he was okay with a draw that early in the tournament, and didn't feel like going through a Winawer with Stein.

perfidious: This was actually the longest of Korchnoi's three games vs his compatriots at Sousse, the others not extending beyond the fifteenth move.

Given that the draw was rigged so that the Soviet players would meet at practically the first available opportunity, I was curious to see whether matchups, such as those involving the Yugoslavs, had been set up in the same way. Turns out that the answer was in the negative.
