Aug-14-07 | | fictionist: queen sac! |
Aug-14-07 | | chessamateur: Saw this pretty quickly. I would have to say I would find this in a blitz game as well, unlike some of the other harder puzzles towards the end of the week. |
Aug-14-07 | | fictionist: saw it easily.may have a similar game played a year ago which takes advantage of opponent's weak 8th rank. |
Aug-14-07 | | chessamateur: Still in the interaction of the pieces in the combination is aesthetically pleasing. |
Aug-14-07 | | fictionist: what is your rating chssamateur? i'm glad to be back here again in CG. |
Aug-14-07 | | mkrk17: Whites positions is so overwhelming. He has lots of moves to win, although the most forcing and shortest is Qxd8+ Qxd8, Rb8 |
Aug-14-07 | | THE pawn: Rxa8 works too, but it's not as forceful... |
Aug-14-07 | | beginner64: Qxd8 followed by Rb8.
I think this one is easy to find OTB. |
Aug-14-07 | | tjshann: Took a minute, but I found it. White gets a passed pawn and take full advantage. |
Aug-14-07 | | nzstew: Pretty easy today. Took me 5 seconds and I'm a patzer. Lilienthal did have some nice games though. |
Aug-14-07 | | SpecialK: QxR+ starts a back row mating net, and it's a win for White. Very good. |
Aug-14-07 | | willyfly: White is up a ♙ and has a passer on the 7th - the b7♖ is safe because if Black plays ♕xb7 then ♕xd8# Both sides have opportunities for a back rank mate. How do we exploit these elements? 25 g4 accomplishes two things - it provides an escape square for the ♔ to avoid a back rank mate but more important it drives the f5♘ to d4 allowing 25 ♘d6 attacking the c4♖ which now must move or be lost White then has
26 ♘xf7+ winning the d8♖ or
26 ♖xa7 the ♕ still cannot recapture
26 ♖xd4 wins the ♘
let's see what happened
-----
I made some real good moves
but all I did was prove
the fact I'll never be
a child prodigy |
Aug-14-07 | | vibes43: Of course, after 25.Rb8 black could create an escape hatch by moving g7 or h7, further delaying the inevitable. |
Aug-14-07 | | Marmot PFL: Obviously the passed pawn is huge, and we already know there is a combinaton...black badly needed a luft square and 21...h6 was his last chance instead of Rc4? |
Aug-14-07 | | vibes43: <willyfly:I'll never be
a child prodigy > Perhaps in our next lifetime. I'm probably closer than you on that score - lol |
Aug-14-07 | | King mega: this is pretty easy. |
Aug-14-07 | | Monkey King: Lol, was to lazy, oh well atleaset I got Saturdays and Sundays last week. Only thing i saw here was Rxa7 with a win in around 5 moves. |
Aug-14-07 | | goldfarbdj: This one seemed easier than yesterday's. "I can sac the Q...does it work? Yes, there's a back-rank mate." |
Aug-14-07 | | jahhaj: I don't think it was so easy. I spent a while looking at other first moves that didn't go anywhere. Once I'd spotted the answer it was easy enough though. |
Aug-14-07 | | battleaxe: I could easily see the solution would be easy, yet I couldn't find it. The position looks steady for the moment but here we are, we found a way in. |
Aug-14-07 | | whiteshark: well known pattern, always nice to play. |
Aug-14-07 | | openingspecialist: Wow what a nightmare of a day! I did get it but it took me longer than last sunday. I took longer than i would have liked to find Bb5 yesturday (about 30seconds). My immediate instict told me that I was going to have to watch out for h6 and f6 when I was trying to trap the queen or mate through Rdb1. I actually got a word document open and started listing combinations but i found it after realising stopping f6 or h6 would be as easy as Qxd8+ Qxd8 Rb8 and it took me another 30 seconds to make sure that it was definately a win. Wow im going to have a good sleep and come back tomorrow for another problem. Can someone create put the position of Thursdays daily puzzle in their game collection and post a link to the collection on Friday as i can't get to the internet on Thursday? Thanks guys and girls, OPS |

Aug-14-07 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <openingspecialist: Can someone create put the position of Thursdays daily puzzle in their game collection and post a link to the collection on Friday as i can't get to the internet on Thursday?> Check out my forum - it is most likely going to be there. |

Aug-14-07 | | MostlyAverageJoe: I don't find today's puzzle particularly appealing, because it has two nearly equivalent solutions (one Qxd8+ played in the game, and another with Rxa7 (which forces Qb8) and only then Qxd8+. Both are clearly winning after a couple moves. Hiarcs 11.2MP tells me that at 18 plies deep, there is less than a pawn difference between the two (+24.57 for Rxa7, 25.12 for Qxd8+). Only with deeper analysis does Qxd8+ become superior. Here's the analysis after 20 plies: (+mate 14) 24. Qxd8+ Qxd8 25. Rb8 h6 26. Nf6 gxf6 27. Rxd8+ Kg7 28. Re8 Nd6 29. exd6 h5 30. d8=Q Kg6 31. Rg8+ Kf5 32. d7 Ra4 33. Qxf6+ Kxf6 34. d8=Q+ Ke5 35. Re1+ Re4 36. f4+ Kxf4 37. Qg5# (+25.42) 24. Rxa7 Qb8 25. Qxd8 Qxd8 26. Ra8 h6 27. Rxd8 Kh7 28. Nd6 Rf4 29. Nxf7 Kg6 30. Rf8 Kh5 31. d8=Q Rg4 32. f3 Rxg2 33. Kxg2 I am not exactly sure why the second line is less forcing. This would've been a better puzzle (a bit later in the week) if it started after the first big blunder by the black, 21 ... Rc4?? - because in that position, there is only one clearly superior choice for white's 22nd move (the one played in the game). However, the continuation has lots of variations to consider, and white's back-rank weakness makes it a bit more challenging. |
Aug-14-07 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Update: 24. Rxa7 delays mate by one move. More analysis results in this line: 24. Rxa7 Qb8 25. Qxd8+ Qxd8 26. Ra8 h6 27. Rxd8+ Kh7 28. Nf6+ gxf6 29. Rf8 Rf4 30. d8=Q Ng7 31. exf6 Nh5 32. Qe8 Kg6 33. Qxf7+ Kg5 34. Qxe6 Ng7 35. fxg7 Rf7 36. g8=Q+ Rg7 37. Qxg7+ Kh5 38. Qeg4# Not that it matters much; the game is clearly over by move 27 in either variation. |
