jnpope: Found a draft card for a Hans Hansen:

<Name: Hans Hansen
Race: White
Birth Date: 20 Nov 1883
Residence Date: 1917-1918
Street Address: 1934 Richmond Terrace
Residence Place: Staten Island, Richmond, New York, USA>

Which seems relevant given:

<F. J. Marshall, the young expert of the Brooklyn C. C., gave an exhibition of simultaneous playing at the Staten Island C. C., St. George, Staten Island, last Friday evening. The team opposed to the single player included nine of the best players in the club, but the Brooklyn expert was too strong for them, and had no difficulty in winning seven of the games. One game was drawn and one lost by Marshall.>
source: Brooklyn <Daily Standard Union>, 1897.11.02, p8

Both of which can be foundational evidence to support that this game was Marshall's only loss from that Staten Island CC exhibition.

Mar-16-25  FM David H. Levin: What is meant by the word "free" (on this page) where the event name would usually appear?

jnpope: Best guess it is another term for an "offhand game" or as we deem them a "casual game".

It's possible this game was played during some <free time> Marshall had during his visit to Staten Island. I am still hunting for the original source for this game and any data establishing the context surrounding it's occurrence.

jnpope: Hilbert gives "Offhand Game" in <Young Marshall>, 2002, Czech Republic, p172. John gives no additional information indicating the context and cites "Source unidentified", which indicates to me that it was found in a scrapbook of miscellaneous newspaper clippings.
Mar-16-25  stone free or die: I couldn't find any mention of a chess playing <H. Hansen> in NYC during that period.

I think I recall some European sources using some word similar to "free" for casual games - but I don't have a clear recall of details.
