 | | fredthebear: In the final position, 28.Kf1 Rd1#. If instead 28.Kh2 Kg2 prepares 29...Rh8#. White would have to give up his queen to delay the mate on the h-file. |

Aug-13-21 | | TheaN: Very to the point Friday, I didn't calculate it through entirely but figured <15....dxc3 16.Qxa8> just as crucial and beautiful is 16.Rd1 cxb2! 17.Rxd8 b1Q+ 18.Rd1 Qb4+ 19.Kf1 Na6 -+ Black has lost exactly nothing after winning the knight on c3! <16....cxb2 -+> and Black must be better; displaced White queen, rook in with c2 falling. |
|
Aug-13-21 | | TheaN: Perhaps safer in the 16.Rd1 line is 19....Qc4+ with 20....Qc6, so that White is not allowed to start a king side attack. In the line I posted though, 20.h5 Rad8 21.Rd4 (what else?) Rxd4 22.exd4 Qb1+ 23.Kg2 Qxc2! -+ and Black controls g6 and the White attack stalls. |

Aug-13-21 | | Brenin: 15 ... dxc3 16 Qxa8 Qd2+ 17 Kf1 cxb2 18 Rb1 (Re1 seems no better) Qxc2 19 Qb7 Nxe5 and Black has 2P, a strong attack, and a P on the 7th for the exchange, e.g. 20 Qxa7 Qe4+ 21 Kg3 Qg4+ 22 Kh2 Nf3 mate. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: Perhaps too easy a puzzle for Friday (Black is obviously busted if he does not take desperate measures), but the entire game looks quite impressive. One almost wonders if 10...h5 was a super-subtle long-range trap. |
|
Aug-13-21 | | drollere: in patzer style i decided push the Q into the game and pay with a R to do it: 15. .. dxc3, 16. Qxa8 Qd2+, 17. Kf1 cxb2, 18. Rb1 Qc1+, 19. Rxc1 bxc1=Q+, 20. Kg2 Qxc2 if 19. Kg2 Qxc2 transposes into the game attack but with the N still protected. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Wow. I missed 28. Kg2 Kg7 and went with 28...Rd2. That wins but not nearly as quickly as the suggested Kg7. |

Aug-13-21 | | mel gibson: I saw the text move straight away but then I was worried about the Black Rook on a8. The pawn on h4 is also a problem. Stockfish 14 says:
15... dxc3
(15. .. dxc3 (d4xc3 b2xc3 ?b8-a6 h4-h5 ?g8-g7 ?a1-d1 ?d8-c8 ?d1-d4 ?a6-c5 c3-c4 ?c8-e6 ?d4-h4 ?e6-f5 ?f3xf5 g6xf5 ?h4-f4 e7-e6 ?f4-d4 ?a8-d8 ?h1-h2 ?c5-e4 ?h2-g2 ?f8-h8 f2-f3 ?e4-c3 ?d4xd8 ?h8xd8 ?g2-d2 ?d8xd2 ?e1xd2 ?c3-a4 ?d2-d3 ?g7-h7 ?d3-d4 c7-c6 f3-f4 ?a4-c5 ?d4-c3 ?c5-e4+ ?c3-b4 ?h7-g7 h5-h6+ ?g7-g6 ?b4-b3 ?e4-g3 ?b3-c3 ?g6-h7 ?c3-d2 ?g3-e4+ ?d2-c1 ?e4-c3 ?c1-d2 ?c3-a4) +3.67/41 29) score for Black +3.67 depth 41. |

 | | Teyss: Difficult indeed: one has to calculate how to win after 21.Qb7 despite being an exchange down. There is still a bit of work even though the WK is exposed, Rs are not coordinated and Q is remote.
BTW White's play is not optimal which makes the puzzle even more complex than it seems.<drollere> I went for the same solution as yours but as you say after 19.Kg2 Qxc2 Black has lost a tempo vs the real solution. So no cigar. Interesting puzzle and game. |

Aug-13-21 | | agb2002: Black is one pawn down.
White threatens Qxa8, Ne4 (perhaps followed by Nf6+) and h5. The possibility of creating a dangerous passed pawn with 15... dxc3 is very attractive: A) 16. Qxa8 Qd2+ 17.Kf1 cxb2 18.Rb1 (18.Re1 Qxe1+ 19.Kxe1 b1=Q+ wins a piece) 18... Qxc2 (18... c6, threatening 19... Qd7 and 20... Na6, looks unclear) 19.Kg2 Nc6 20.Qb7 Qe4+ A.1) 21.Kg(f)1 Qxb1+ wins decisive material.
A.2) 21.Kh2 Qxh4+ 22.Kg2 Qg4+ 23.Kf1 (23.Kh2 Kg7 followed by Rh8#) 23... Qe4 (all white pieces are momentarily defenseless) 24.Ke2 Nd4+ wins the queen at least. A.3) 21.Kh3 Qf3+ 22.Kh2 Qxf2+ 23.Kh3 Qxe3+, followed by Qe2+ and Rd8, looks winning. A.4) 21.Kg3 Qxe5+ 22.Kg2 (22.f4 Qxe3+ as in A.3) 22... Qe4+ 23.Kg3 f5 followed by f4+, or Qg4+ as in A.1, seems to win (24.Rxb2 Qxh1). A.5) 21.f3 Qc2+, followed by Rd8 or Nxe5-d3-c1, looks winning. B) 16.Rd1 cxb2
B.1) 17.Rxd8 b1=Q+ 18.Rd1 Qb4+, unclear. A possible line is 19.Kf1 Qb5+ 20.Kg1 Nc6 21.h5 Nxe5 22.Qh3 Qe6 23.Qg3 (23.Qh2 Nf3+) 23... Qg4. B.2) 17.Qxa8 Qxd1+ 18.Kxd1 b1=Q+ wins.
B.3) 17.h5 cxb2 18.hxg6 fxg6, unclear.
C) 16.h5 cxb2 17.Rd1 Nc6, unclear (18.Rxd8 b1=Q+; 18.Qxc6 Qxd1+). |
