Feb-14-05  Granite: have to love a finish with a queen sac. It looks like black wins at first then but it's too late.
Aug-14-07  syracrophy: A perfect puzzle after White's 34.♘xd5

After 36.♔g1 ♖bh8 and the ♔ dies on h1

An Englishman: Good Evening: Excellent finish. The 3...f5 variation of the English is very aggressive and requires careful handling.

Preferred 3.g3 to 3.Nf3 because the Knight actually functions better on e2 (well, it did in my games). Typical line: 3.g3,f5; 4.Bg2,Nf6; 5.e3,d6; 6.Nge2, and White will have f2-f4 available to block Black's f-pawn.

  Honza Cervenka: 31.Qb4 was a grave mistake. The only chance of white to stay in the game was 31.Rxe7! Bxe7 32.Nxc6 with tactically very rich but probably balanced position, for example 32...h4 33.Nxb8 fxg3 34.Qd7 Qf4 35.Qf5!, or 32...Be8 33.Bb5 Bxc6 34.Bxc6 h4 35.Ra1 fxg3 36.fxg3 Bg5 37.Nxd5 Qf7 38.Rf1 (38.Qa7 is also possible) 38...Qe6 39.Qa7+ Kh6 40.Qd7 etc., or 32...fxg3 33.fxg3 Be8 34.Bb5 Bxc6 35.Bxc6 Bg5 36.Re1 Rhf8 37.Bxd5 Bd2 38.Re2 Rxb6 39.Qd1 Rb2 40.Rxd2 etc.

perfidious: In adulthood, Black would come to grief in 3....f5 at the hands of a lovely attacking effort in another POTD: M Rohde vs S Polgar, 1992.

  HeMateMe: I'll drink to that!
Oct-23-24  Atking: <Honza Cervenka: 31.Qb4 was a grave mistake. > That's correct but in another hand Black should not give up the diagonal c8-h3. 23...Ne7 for Bf5 then a well timed g4 for f3
Oct-23-24  sfm: <HeMateMe: I'll drink to that!>

The game was played afternoon. Like others, Ms. Polgar would have had too strong principles to mess with Smirnov before breakfast.

Oct-23-24  sfm: <Honza Cervenka: 31.Qb4 was a grave mistake. The only chance of white to stay in the game was 31.Rxe7!...>

Right, and so, SF tells us that exactly for allowing this, Blacks previous move 30.-,Rh8?? was a major mistake, throwing away all the advantage. Correct was 30.-,Re8, (-2.62 (24 ply)), but it hopelessly complicated. https://www.chessgames.com/analysis...

OhioChessFan: There was a TV show called "Suddenly Susan.". But I'm at a loss to identify "Simply Susan."

HeMateMe: hi OCF. You are correct--I erred in the pun, thinking that i was naming the name of the TV show (1990s?) in which Brooke Shields starred as a young divorcee, all on her own for the first time in life.

After the Dodgers/Yanks World Series I'm going to march off to the nearest disintegration chamber as penance.
