GrahamClayton: A classic example of the King's power as a blockading piece, using the white h-pawn as a defensive shield to nullify White's attack down the h-file.

Sep-21-08  mcgee: I feel like I have seen or played too many of these positions where moves like 16 f6 just seem to do the attacker no favours. White needs to keep the position fluid and double-edged & something like 16 fxg6 makes more sense to my eyes..
Jul-11-09  Ulhumbrus: Byrne made no attempt to advance his h pawn to h5 in this game, or perhaps he decided to use the time which could be spent on that purpose in other ways. Instead of 13 Qh4, 13 Qe2 keeps the h pawn free to advance to h5.

perfidious: The plan with 10.Rg3 looks artificial, but Byrne's idea may have been improved upon in the following game: Tringov vs S Cvetkovic, 1990, where Black gets blasted off the board without trace.

The Knight tour Nc3-e2-f4-h3-g4+ lead to this position.

How about 23.Nxf7+ Nxf7 24.Rxg6. That would have been a good way to end the Knight tour. Or even 23.h7 instead of the Knight sac.

It appears Spassky sweated on it. His next move after 23.Bf4 which looks like it is preparing Nxf7 was 23...Be8 holding f7.
