Apr-15-05  WorldChampeen: 32. ...Rxb2 seals Black's fate in a game where White has the advantage but it is still close. Spraggett then sets up a mating net; one almost wonders if he intentionally gives his Rook to Spassky with 35. Rxh7+; displaying confidence in his ability to soon checkmate the opponent.

However, if White responded to move 32. ...Rxb2 with 33. Kxb2 ; there may be issues of perpetual check to deal with. Apparently he chose the correct way out of the situation.

vonKrolock: <32...♖b2>?? Just another Boris’ klutzpfottschlag, that loses on the spot.

A more prudent attempt was: 32...♕e7, and now after 33.♖f7 ♕e8 34.♕h6! ♕f7 35.♖f7 ♔f7 36.♕f6, appreciate: a) 36...♔e8 37.♘e6! etc; and
b) 36...♔g8 37.♘c6!! – beautifull – the ♘ can be swallowed in two ways, but white wins in both of them

Jun-07-14  znsprdx: @WorldChampeen: #5.Rxh7+ was FORCED WIN -what else was playable?

@vonKrolock: Fascinating- I wonder if Kevin had the time to work out this Qe7 variation(s)

My first attempt - not finding Ka1 - was 32.Nc6 since neither the Rook nor the Queen can capture the Knight...but um-er-ah the Bishop capturing leaves me with egg on my face....

Of course how many of us in time pressure would have tried 32.Rg6+ and hoped for the best

Jun-07-14  Howard: One of the biggest upsets of the tournament--no doubt about it.

zydeco: 22...g5?! looks like the move of a confident man determined to beat a tournament tailender.

If 35.Qxg2 Qxd4+ 36.Qb2 Qxb2+ 37.Kxb2 white still has to play out a long endgame. 35.Rxh7+! is faster.

A funny finale here is 37.Qh4+ Kg6 38.Qh7+ Kg5 39.Nf3+ Kg4 40.Qh4#. I'm sure Spraggett was just trying to find a way to get to the time control with his win intact, which he did.

Apr-17-17  morfishine: A very nice series of moves by GM Spraggett

Fairly rare for Spassky to be the victim like this
