Jan-16-14  Cemoblanca: <SenorMorphy: Oddly enough, Jeff Sonas's sight (www.chessmetrics.com) does not have a historical rating for Sultan Khan.>

I read somewhere (it was the last edition of the magazine KARL [http://www.karlonline.org/], if I remember correctly), that his historical Elo rating was around 2699 and made him among the 10 best players in the world in November 1933.

Not true. http://www.chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/... You must have been thrown off because Chessmetrics has him under "S" rather than "K."

<Cemoblanca>'s recollection is close to correct. Chessmetics indeed has his peak rating at 2699, in November 1932. His peak world rank was No. 6, in May 1933. http://www.chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/...

piltdown man: How can they be playing the Kasparov-Petrosian variation, thirty three years before Kasparov was born, and Petrosian still in nappies?

Kasparov played some amazing games in this variation early in his career. Chess variations are sometimes named for players who developed or popularized them, rather than whoever first played them.

This is screamingly obvious, but kibiitzers ask the question often for some reason. Along with my other favorite, <why hasn't this game been kibitzed?>

<he and I were the only chessplayers at a Jewish boarding house where, I still remember it, the cooking was indeed infinitely better than anything offered by the smarter hotels of the resort.>

Today, of course, they have <Jamie Oliver>. The only guy who was aware that anybody who can boil an egg can make a master chef in England. :-)

Oct-13-15  Garech: I never get tired of playing through this game,a sheer masterclass of dynamics! God only knows the heights Mir Sultan Khan could have reached had he been able to devote his life to chess instead of servitude. Is there anyone else with a perfect score against Capablanca?

Yeah. Iljin-Genevsky and Verlinksy, to name two. When you only play one game, it sometimes happens.

There's only one player with a winning record against Capablanca based on more than one game played, but I'll let you figure out who it is.

Paul Keres.

Jan-13-17  ChessHigherCat: <EmperorAtahualpa:
Why doesn Black's queen never take the pawn on f2, by the way? For instance, 51...Qxf2 or 55...Qxf2.>

If 55...Qxf2+ 56. Rc6-c2 wins the Q: If 56..Qh4 57. Rh2 or if 56...Qf3 57. Bg2 or if 56...Qg1 57. Bh3!

51..Qxf2, 52. Bg4 and the Q has a whopping total of 1 square to choose from (h4), 53. Bc8 and if BxB, Rx B or if Ba8 Ba6 and either case white can finally penetrate the b(l)ack ranks.

I seriously doubt that I'm the first one to ever analyze these variations. Can anybody confirm those lines?

  beatgiant: On 51..Qxf2, <52. Bh5> Qh4 53. Rh2 looks like an immediate win.
Jan-13-17  ChessHigherCat: <beatgiant: On 51..Qxf2, <52. Bh5> Qh4 53. Rh2 looks like an immediate win> Good point. Trading the Q for a B + R wouldn't usually be so dramatic but here 53...QxBh5, 54. Rxh5 gxh5 55. g6 Nf6 56. Bg5 Ke7 57. gxh and black's goose is cooked.

George Edward Wainwright thrashed him 3-0. Khan also beat Capa in a simul, recently submitted; if a pun must be rehashed, at least choose another game.

A teensy bit like <ketchuplover>, then. <I am undefeated vs. Mr.Capablanca>.

"Cowered", huh? WWI was, by any rational account, a stupid war. In contrast to WWII, the countries weren't fighting against imperialist countries looking to exploit and destroy others. It was just a big-ol' extended battle of trench warfare, causing senseless death and destruction. If Capa didn't have to fight, I don't see how that's any kind of stain on his legacy.
