Feb-17-09		FSR: Watson and Schiller in their excellent (yes, an excellent Schiller book - really!) "The Big Book of Busts", p. 217, suggest 10...Na5!? 11.Qg4+ Kf7 12.Qf3+ Ke6 13.Qg4+ with a draw.

Mar-11-09		Thrajin: I'm "head over heels" for this game. In fact, I want to go outside and "shout" about it. Aggressive games like this remind me that "everybody wants to rule the world" of chess.

Mar-11-09		playground player: I keep meaning to try this attack--especially since I made a hash of my last Fried Liver Attack and wound up losing the game. And with the database saying I had an 85% chance to win, no less!

Mar-11-09		Phony Benoni: The immediate Fried Liver Attack (5...Nxd5 6.Nxf7) is probably not totally sound, especially in correspondence play. 6.d4 is a better line, and 6...Bb4+ is an innovation suggested by Albert Pinkus in the early 1940s. So the line was quite topical at the time; in fact, as I recall, Reuben Fine in his <Practical Chess Openings> (1948) exclammed 6...Bb4+. Unfortunately, the Lolli Attack appears to have been met by an LOL Defense. More a case for Fears for Tears, I think.

Mar-11-09		TheDestruktor: Playing a position like you would play a similar position can be dangerous. The most common opening line here is 6.Nxf7 Kxf7 7.Qf3+ Ke6 8.Nc3, and black plays 8...Nce7 to reinforce the knight on d5. So black wanted to empty the e7 square to play ...Nce7, that is the only explanation I can see for the move 10...Bf8. But it was not needed, because here white does not have the move Nc3. So black spend two precious defensive tempos, and also undeveloped a developed piece, to reinforce something that, in this particular case, did not need special reinforcement. And that gave white the two tempos it needed to decisively bring the knight to the attack. Black could have played 10...Na5 with a complex game, but not a forced loss. After 10...Bf8 and 11...Ne7, black was losing.

Mar-11-09		swordfish: Generally, I think 5....Nxd5 is best avoided (...Na5 is better; I think...Nd4 is also playable), unless of course Black has carefully prepared for this line, which doesn't seem to be the case in this game--a correspondence miniature.

Mar-11-09		Viewer Deluxe: Of course, if black played 15…Kxe5 their queen is lost after 16.Nf7+ Kf6 17.Qf3+ but the game could still go on. That's why 15.Bxd5+, which checkmates in 4, is a cleaner win. Take a look: http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2009/...
