plang: This was the first game from their match in the first round of the WC tournament; the second was drawn clinching the match for Alterman. Alterman lost to Georgiev in the second round. 11..Bd6 was new but it doesn't seem like an improvement over 11..Be7. Alterman felt that the best defense would have been 23..Qb6 24 b4..a5 25 b5 when white is only slightly better. Wells may have planned on defending against the exchange sacrifice 24 dxc! with 26..Qb6 and then realized that he was lost after 27 Rd6..Qxb7 28 Rxf6..gxf 29 Qxh6+..Kg8 30 Nd5. Byrne felt that 36..Rc8 trading the rooks was a mistake lessening blacks admittedly slim drawing chances.
