FSR: See http://www.kenilworthchessclub.org/... for much more analysis. Among other things, the author says that 9...Qxa4+!! draws by force, but that 9.d4 cxd4 10.Bxa6 bxa6 11.Nc5! wins for White.
Feb-21-09  WhiteRook48: why not 18. Ka4?

  FSR: <WhiteRook48> After 18.Ka4?? Bc4!, it's hasta la vista, baby (19...b5#).
Feb-21-09  WhiteRook48: thanks. Silly me.
Mar-19-09  WhiteRook48: at first I thought 19 Kxb7?? Kd7!
Mar-20-09  parmetd: this might be the best draw ever. there is good analysis in Art of Attack on this game.
Jun-13-09  WhiteRook48: on move 14, why does he not take the bishop?
Jul-31-09  DanielBryant: <WhiteRook48>

However Black chooses to take the bishop, it allows White to at least temporarily escape the mating net. If White can at all consolidate, he's winning since Black has invested a queen.

Aug-05-09  lolototo: The game that started Kramnik's career - the most influential game of all time for him!

Oct-21-09  Qb6: What's wrong with 17. Kxb7?
Oct-21-09  backrank: If 17. Kxb7??, so Kd7! 18. Qg4+ Kd6! followed by Rhb8#.

As already mentioned above by <parmetd>, this game is analysed in Vukovic' classic 'The art of attack'.

However, one can argue a lot about the verdict 'the best draw ever'. Read Heidenfeld's book 'Draw!' to learn something about the best draws ever :)

May-29-10  Robotics: how can this be immortal
Jun-22-10  MaltaCross: Kudos to WhiteRook48 and to chess Mater FSR, for their 21 February 2009 comments. To WhiteRook48 for asking that interesting question, and to FSR for his clear and electrifying reply. Bless you both!

He was too full from eating all the other pieces.

Seriously, after <19.Kxb7 Kd7!>. Black threatens 20...Rhb8# If then <20.Qg4+ Kd6>, WHite has no good checks left and can only delay mate for a move by giving away his queen.

By the way, just the move before in this position:

White has to play 18.Kc6 because after 18.Ka4 Bc4! he cannot stop ...b5#.

Jan-10-12  sofouuk: rybka says white would have been winning (>+2.0) if 11 Kb5! had been played

now 11 ... a5 12 b4!; 11 ... b6 12 d4. hopefully this isnt correct because it would obviously spoil the game, but in such positions it's hardly worth arguing with the beast (and she clearly does have a good idea of what's going on bcz the evals go immediately to 0.00 after 11 Kb4 a5 12 Kxc5)

Jan-10-12  sofouuk: overnight rybka run

11 Kb5 Ne7 12 c4 d4 13 Kxc5 a5 14 Qa4+ Kd8 15 Qxa5!

... Rxa5 16 Kb4 Nc6+ 17 Kb3 Be6 18 d3 b5 19 Bd2 bxc4+ 20 dxc4 Rb5+ 21 Kc2 Bf5+ 22 Kc1

black's central passed pawns and development mean the game continues, but its clearly advantage white

Penguincw: <cg> should start repeating puns.
Feb-22-12  Memethecat: That ending must of been so frustrating for white. As soon as 12Kxc5 he's locked inside enemy territory & I think its a draw as so as he accepts the Q sac. Must of been prepared before hand by Meitner. Probably the cutest draw I've ever seen. ^.^
Feb-22-12  kevin86: One of the most exciting games in history! Black forces a perpetual as any attempt for white to escape are met by a quick mate.

Domdaniel: <Meme> -- < Must of been prepared before hand by Meitner.>

Unlikely. 19th century players of the Romantic school didn't do a lot of preparation. But many of them were much better at calculating tactics than modern players are, and more willing to gamble on unclear positions. Their positional sense was weaker, though.

You mean "must have", btw. Or "must've". Spelling it 'must of' is rong. A negative meme.

Feb-22-12  Once: <Dom> I suspect that "must of" is one of those phrases which is on the cusp of changing from "ever so wrong" into something that is perfectly acceptable. In the same way that "alright" became ... well, alright. I blame the Beatles.

In a similar vein a split infinitive is now allowed by the Economist style guide. If anything, a split infinitive is preferred to one that is clumsily unsplit, as in "boldly to go."

I have this nightmare of a dystopian future where language mutates into yoofspeak. Where dictionaries have no problem with "l8er" and "later" is listed as archaic. Where "th" is replaced by "f" wherever and whenever possible.

Fascinating game, BTW. I'm sure that black was convinced he was winning a stunning brilliancy all the way to move 13. And then white uncorked 13. Bc6 - the only move to draw.

And then black might have had that sinking feeling where a certain win dwindles into a miserable loss, only to see it salvaged as a memorable draw.

I don't know who would be the most relieved - black or white. I guess that both must of been.
