Jan-28-04  Benjamin Lau: To clarify, it's not my analysis- it's the analysis Informant created, that I brought here. Just to avoid future misunderstanding.

Robert, can you give me an idea of when you're going to play 12. Kb1? In which analysis (i.e. give the preceding moves), it makes it less confusing. Certainly I don't see why you want to play 12. Kb1 in the game.

Jan-28-04  TrueFiendish: Re: WMD's Japanese girl limerick--aren't the third and fourth lines a bit out of metre?

tech draw: are you suggesting we PROOF READ what we write?? Ack! (gasps for air, tugs at collar) No! You can't make me! Ack!

Jan-29-04  DavidDylanRoberts: Benjamin, I mistyped. I meant 21. Kb1 not 12. Kb1. And in the actual game. But now I see that black can play 21. ...Kg7 to avoid the mate. White's 22. Qh7 would not mate but drive the King to f6 with the chance to escape to e7. Polgar's 21. Nxg5 is better.
Jan-29-04  DavidDylanRoberts: Benjamin,
New question: the analysis gives 21... Kg7 22. Ne6! Kf6 (22... fe6 23. Qh7 Kf6 24. g5! Kg5 25. Qh4 mate) 23. Nd8 Be4 24. Qf4 and White is winning.

How about 22. Nh7 to cut off the King escaping to f6. White's plan is Qh6 driving the king to g1 again and then, Ng5, Qh7 will mate. Continuations for Black:

22. ...Bxe4 (eyeing the rook). 23. Qh6+ Kg8 24. Nf6+! and 24 ...Qxf6 25. Qh7 mate or 24 ...Nxf6 Qh8 mate. [23 ...Kh8 loses to 24. Nxf8 Kg8 25. Qh8 mate]. 24. Ng5 should also work. Elegant is 24. Ng5 Bxh1 25. Qh7 mate, as Polgar has only the queen and knight left but still mates on the h file.

I am still analyzing 22. ...f4 (or f5) and 22. ...Rh8.

Somehow I want Polgar to get the checkmate and not have to settle for winning material as with 22. Nxe6.

Jan-29-04  DavidDylanRoberts: Okay, I think 22. Nh7 f5 (or f6) fails to Bxh6 which cuts the King off at f7.

But: I think 22. Nh7 Rh8 defends against mate because 23. Qh6+ Kg8 and not 24. Nf6+ because Qxf6 defends the rook at h8 and the rook defends h7. So 22. Ne6 is best after 21. ...Kg7.

Left to analyze would be 24. Bxg6. But White is running out of material

Jan-29-04  Benjamin Lau: I'm confused about what you're trying to do so I can't really analyze with you. Are you trying to see if 22. Nh7 in the analysis would also win, not just 21...Kg7 22. Ne6!

<Left to analyze would be 24. Bxg6. But White is running out of material >

When are you considering playing 24. Bxg6? After what moves? It's very confusing for me. It obviously isn't the game since black is clearly lost already and white has no bishop to make this sacrifice anyway. And while white is running out of material, I don't see why this would matter if Polgar has a mate. When do you think white should play 24. Bxg6 and for what purpose? Do you think you found a superior continuation for white?

<New question: the analysis gives 21... Kg7 22. Ne6! Kf6 (22... fe6 23. Qh7 Kf6 24. g5! Kg5 25. Qh4 mate) 23. Nd8 Be4 24. Qf4 and White is winning. How about 22. Nh7 to cut off the King escaping to f6.>

Why would you want to try out 22. Nh7 when the given analysis is probably better and more straight forward? Do you think the analysis is incorrect?

Dec-23-04  Whitehat1963: A gorgeous game, full of jaw droppers and double takes.
Apr-16-05  kevin86: The rook and queen on the h file are too strong for just about anyone-you can't run and can't hide from them!
Apr-16-05  Jaymthegenius: Didnt this girl defeat Boris Spassky very badly? Too bad she wasnt born earlier, she could have been world champion.
Apr-16-05  meloncio: Thanks <chessgames.com> for the pun. We Beatlemaniacs do appreciate this kind of little hommages.
Apr-16-05  bronx27: Nice way of opening up the H-File.
Apr-16-05  JohnTal: A great game from Judit - in my best style. However, I would have played 24 Qh6 ending all resistance with mate threats at h7 and h8.

Both attempts to protect h7 fail against h8 - and moving the f pawn allows mate at h7.Furthermore, any move by the f rook still allows mate at h8.

As it is, Berkes concluded that Resistance is Futile - and didn't want to pursue a long difficult ending with a R, Kt and P against Judit's Q.

A great game - am I missing something?

Apr-16-05  PivotalAnorak: 24 Qh6 Bxh1
Apr-16-05  ThomYorke: Hi people. What about 17) ... Rh8
Apr-16-05  Shams: <Thom Yorke> this is probably hugely flawed but after a brief look I think

17...Rh8
18.Ne5 Nxe5
19.Qxe5+ f6
20.gxf6+ Bxf6
21.Rxh8!
wins for white, the key line being 21...Kxh8 22.Qh2+ and 23.Rh1

or something like that

Apr-16-05  soberknight: 21 Kb1 Kg7! 22 Qh7+ Kf6 23 Nxg5 Bxe4! 24 Nxe4+ Ke7 leaves Black a rook ahead with a safe king.
Apr-18-05  JohnTal: A horrific goof on my part - I knew/suspected the Judit had a better reason to take the Bishop, but I missed the obvious.

Many thanks Pivotal - serves me right for being hasty.

May-21-05  schnarre: The Burn Variation of the French seems okay at first, but White shouldn't have any real difficulty beating it!
Oct-08-05  ConfusedPatzer: I can't believe how ignorant and just plain retarded Fischer and Kasparov are when it comes to anything other than chess! They should put up their pictures next to the dictionary definition of idiot savant.
Oct-12-05  Karpova: @ConfusedPatzer
What does Kasparov's and Fischer's ignorance have to do with this game?
Nov-18-05  Catfriend: I'd guess he means their opinions about women playing chess.
Jan-13-06  schnarre: <Catfriend> Perhaps!?
Mar-16-06  Whitehat1963: One of my favorite games from the Player of the Day.
Jun-23-06  vizir: 14. g4 ! exellent move I'll remember it
Jun-23-06  RookFile: Yeah, I remember Karpov made a move like this once.
