Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-15-09  blacksburg: 4...d6 is an uncommon move. the main move is 4...Nf6, but 4...d6 prevents the Max Lange Attack. is there any drawback to 4...d6 that i'm not seeing?

beatgiant: Is the game score correct? Not <50...Qh8+> instead of <50...Qh2> as given here>

<drawback to 4...d6> I'm not an expert in this opening, but 4...d6 looks like it allows White time to play 5. c3 followed by 6. d4.
Apr-15-09  blacksburg: <beatgiant> thanks, i find such things to be rather subtle. is it really so bad to allow this? after all, white gets away with this in the ruy lopez, but the closed ruy seems to be ok for black...hmmm...

either way, i'd be willing to allow this if it meant sidestepping the Max Lange. i think i'm the only person in the world that is scared of it.

Apr-15-09  acirce: <blacksburg> What's so horrible about 4..Nf6 5.d4 Bxd4 ? Yes it's a bit scary too but at least not as irrational as the Max Lange (thank God you can avoid that) and Black should be totally fine with just a little bit of precision.
Apr-15-09  blacksburg: <acirce> thanks, that seems like a good idea, i don't know why i've never thought of that before.

Open Defence: whats so scary about the Max Lange Attack ?
Apr-15-09  blacksburg: i don't know...i find it irrational. i don't like having that <FAWN PAWN> on g7 and having my queen kicked around in the center. i seem to have trouble finding the right moves in the resulting positions, especially in blitz.

disclaimer: i am a big scaredy-cat.

beatgiant: With the game score as given <50...Qh2>, White has 51. a8=Q and I don't see Black's win.

But <50...Qh8+> does win as in the game, e.g. 51. Kb7 Qxb2 52. a8=Q Qg2+ followed by trading queens for a simple win in the pawn ending.

That's why I asked above if the game score is correct.

Dec-19-20  Stolzenberg: Nobody would play such a silly move like 50. ... ♕h2, as 50. ... ♕g8+ instead would win so easily. It would follow 51. ♔b7 ♕xb3 52. a8♕ ♕d5+ 53. ♔a7 ♕xa8+ 54. ♔xa8 c4 = 0:1.
