Feb-14-12 | | Patriot: 17...Qh5+ 18.gxh5 Rh4# This was more like a Monday problem. |
Feb-14-12 | | Garech: It seems they have the Monday and Tuesday puzzles mixed up this week - this was simpler than yesterday, for sure - and yesterday wasn't easy enough for a Monday problem, IMO! -Garech |
Feb-14-12 | | agb2002: <johnlspouge: <Once>, I hope they are paying you for this stuff. ROFL.> There are two classes of chess writers. One is for Stefan Zweig, Vladimir Nabokov, Katherine Neville, Ian Fleming, Ronan Bennett, etc. The other is for <Once>. So, yes, they should pay him. |
Feb-14-12 | | whiteshark: 17...Qh5+ 18. gxh5 Rh4# and that's it |
Feb-14-12 | | dangerhump: I'm a dunce, kept trying to make Nxc3 or Rxe3 work |
Feb-14-12 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: In this middle-game attacking position, white is down a pawn, but has trapped black's knight. However, white's king is fatally exposed and black can put the knight to maximum use with 17... Qh5+! 18.gxh5 Rh4#, a beautiful application of Anastasia's mate. |
Feb-14-12 | | VincentL: "Easy".
Easier than yesterday. Queen sacrifice on Tuesday this week. 17.... Qh5+ 18. gxh5 (only move) Rh4#. |
Feb-14-12 | | Memethecat: <agb2002,zb2cr,johnlspouge> Please refrain from encouraging this type of behaviour, especially now that legal proceedings are under way. It could sway the judges "already difficult" decision regarding the restraining/committal order.8>) |
Feb-14-12 | | Shelter417: What am I missing? I don't get the pun at ALL. |
Feb-14-12 | | jrbleau: Once, if you ever publish your chess stories (and I hope you do), you could call them "Once Upon a Tempo". |
Feb-14-12 | | TheTamale: Very nice!
<Shelter417>, it probably speaks better of you that you don't get the pun! Note that White's surname is Hammer. In the 1980s, MC Hammer made a zillion dollars with "Can't Touch This," which was essentially a spoken-word remake of Rick James' "Super Freak" with inferior lyrics. Maybe "It's Hammer's Time" would have been better...? |
Feb-14-12 | | Nemesistic: 17..Qh5+.. This was really easy, i don't think iv ever got one quicker |
Feb-14-12 | | Shamot: <agb2002> well said! <once> has a class of his own. Can somebody compile some of his selected pieces and post them in in one place ?! i do not know how to do it. I thank you <once> for all! |

Feb-14-12 | | squaresquat: The puzzle was a hoot. It's not the pieces its the squares; be aware of the square. Fred Reinfeld |
Feb-14-12 | | Memethecat: Maybe CG changed the natural order of things because VD is today, thereby allowing le feme the last word. |
Feb-14-12 | | jackpawn: Found immediately. Based on the comments I was not alone in being a tactical genius! :) |
