Aug-24-06  cicero1974: <discriminative and chauvanistic> discriminatory and chauvinistic
Sep-05-06  vesivialvy93: rookfile ; a 2100 female ....really she was 2100 ??? .....fide or uscf ?
May-17-07  Helios727: What happens after 22. gxf3 ?
Jul-19-07  CapAnson: Helios .. N-e5 for one, followed by f5 and an attack. Is this the only known Fischer game against a woman?
Jul-19-07  Petrosianic: The only known game that we have the moves of. It's known that he played the Polgars privately.
Feb-07-08  Inf: Im sure some day the polgar's and Karpov will submit the games (moves) against Fischer. I would love to see Karpov doing this, since they say that the 2 giants played some blitz in private when they were on negotiations about the failed 1975 WC match.
Feb-07-08  MichAdams: <It isnt sexist to note that women and men's brains are physiologically different.>

Oh, yes it is. Your mistake is to think of sexism as a pejorative term, rather than a descriptive one.

Botvinnik, Fischer, Portisch, et al., are all correct. It's unthinkable that there ever will be a female world chess champion.

keypusher: <TylerD> <Men dominate the "genius category" because of sexism. If women were given equal respect and opportunities there would be just as many women "geniuses". Please do not go through life believing anything else. We are living in the 21th century, for God´s sake!>

Unsupported conclusion followed by exhortation followed by unrelated premise, with scare quotes and the Deity thrown in. I agree, classic 21st-century argument. They wouldn't have tolerated such nonsense in the 12th.

Feb-07-08  Jim Bartle: Whether "genuises" or distinctive people of any sort emerge depends on the presence of the proper conditions.

There was a (relatively) serious article in Slate a couple of weeks ago, asking "Where did all these gorgeous Russian (and former Soviet-bloc) women come from?"

It referred primarily to tennis players such as Sharapova, Ivanovic, Hantuchova, etc. But it could have applied to the female chessplayers as well.

The conclusion was that these women have always existed (duh!), but previously there were very limited ways, or motive, for them to stand out and they ended up on assembly lines, farms, or staying at home. Now that there is opportunity, they appear.

Feb-07-08  apple pi: <"Where did all these gorgeous Russian (and former Soviet-bloc) women come from?"> Well if I had to take a guess...
Feb-07-08  Jim Bartle: OK, here's the story:

Feb-07-08  Shams: <<<It isnt sexist to note that women and men's brains are physiologically different.>>Oh, yes it is. Your mistake is to think of sexism as a pejorative term, rather than a descriptive one.>

<MichAdams> by the law of averages, you should someday say something that makes sense. I hope I don't miss it. Is it "speciesist" to note that fish swim and birds fly? Is it "ageist" to note that Alzheimer's primarily afflicts the elderly?

Sexism <is> a pejorative word. Ask 1,000 native speakers and they would all agree. Come on, man.

Feb-07-08  MichAdams: It's commonly used as a pejorative term, yes, but that only shows how widespread the error is. And why the posting guideline <No obscene, racist, sexist, or profane language> is evidently absurd, one more observed in the exception, not the rule.

Feb-08-08  EdwardChisam: It couldn't have been good for Forbes to play Bf4 and Bd2 within the first 8 moves of this game. I see no compelling reason not to play 8. Bd3 and develop a fresh piece. If I had ever had a chance to play Fischer, the focus would have been on development, development, development early.
Feb-08-08  Shams: I'm afraid the error is yours.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-...

1: prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women 2: behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex

Feb-08-08  Jim Bartle: Hey, shams, I cry foul! No fair looking up the true meaning, in the Dictionary no less!!
Feb-08-08  MichAdams: <1: prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women>

Now, let's see a dictionary definition of discrimination:

<1. the act of discriminating, or distinguishing differences 2. the ability to make or perceive distinctions; perception; discernment>

http://www.yourdictionary.com/discr...

So, properly understood, sexism means the ability to distinguish between men and women.

Therefore, I, and, I suspect, the overwhelming majority og cg.com's readership, are sexists. Hence the posting guideline <No obscene, racist, sexist, or profane language.> needs to be amended.

Feb-08-08  MaxxLange: I can't imagine getting a chance to play Fischer and breaking out....the London System. It transposed into a harmless looking Pirc line in a few moves, of course, but still.
Feb-08-08  Tomlinsky: <MichAdams: 1. the act of discriminating, or distinguishing differences 2. the ability to make or perceive distinctions; perception; discernment>

Ahhh but let's now see a dictionary definition of <distinguish>

1 to notice or understand the difference between two things, <or to make one person or thing seem different from another>

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/def...

8P

Feb-08-08  MichAdams: Henceforth, I suggest posting guideline 1 simply read: <No @#$%ing obscene language>.

<distinguish>

1 to notice or understand the difference between two things, <or to make one person or thing seem different from another>

But the second half of that definition is simply wrong, to the extent that it means imputing non-existent differences to two things. I suspect it's just sloppy drafting. None of the examples given below the definition have anything to do with imputing differences that exist only in the mind of the distinguisher.

<He's colour-blind and can't distinguish (the difference) between red and green easily.

I sometimes have difficulty distinguishing Spanish from Portuguese.

It's important to distinguish between business and pleasure.

It's not the beauty so much as the range of his voice that distinguishes him from other tenors.>

Of course <sexist> was coined (circa 1970, according to the ever-reliable internet) as a term of criticism. I suspect MichAdams is aware of that.

Feb-08-08  MichAdams: <I can't imagine getting a chance to play Fischer and breaking out....the London System.>

Can't recall the details, but Fischer took part in a radio broadcast consultation game in London during the early 1960s. If memory serves, Bob Wade also participated, and the game was adjourned for lack of time and later adjudicated as a draw.

Feb-08-08  MichAdams: <Of course <sexist> was coined (circa 1970, according to the ever-reliable internet) as a term of criticism. I suspect MichAdams is aware of that.>

Coined, yes, but in error. Discrimination is an amoral term.

Feb-08-08  MaxxLange: Did you guys ever notice that dictionaries sometimes have more than one entry for a single word?
Feb-08-08  Tomlinsky: <keypusher> Yep. Another day another dictionary. I'm off to burn my boxers...
