May-02-04  SicilianDragon: Simply beautiful
Aug-10-04  seoulmama: Yes, this is a well played attack by Jobava. Long live the Dragon.
Aug-10-04  Tennyson: What's the point of white delaying Bc4 again? I used to know. It seems to allow black to free up his game with impunity after 9. ... d5. Sorry guys. I'm constantly looking for ways to crush the dragon.

FSR: A new record, as far as is known, between submission of a pun and its use as GOTD: 12 years, 8 months, and 5 days, eclipsing I A Horowitz vs Fine, 1934 ("A Fine Attack") - 12 years, 4 months, and 18 days. I never thought I'd live to see this pun used.

Black often responds to the usual 9.Bc4 with 9...Bd7 10.O-O-O Rc8 11.Bb3 Ne5 12.Kb1 Nc4 12.Bxc4 Rxc4. (Giri in his Chessable course prefers 9...Nxd4 10.Bxd4 Be6. Stockfish 17.1 agrees.) After 9.O-O-O, Black will be two tempi behind if he robotically plays 9...Bd7 10.g4 Rc8 11.h4 Ne5 12.Kb1 Nc4 13.Bxc4 Rxc4. Someone did that against my high school teammate Kenneth Mohr circa 1975, and got crushed. Stockfish 17.1 confirms that White is winning after 14.h5! (+2.8). See Opening Explorer.

Ken thought he had refuted the Dragon, not realizing that after 9.O-O-O, Black has 9...d5! Stockfish confirms that it is best. But there are ways that White can try for an advantage there as well. Opening Explorer and ChessBase Online both show that White scores better with 9.O-O-O than 9.Bc4. My game F Rhine vs T Franck, 2024, like most ICCF games, ended in a draw.

Would that be with congressional impunity?

  FSR: 23...Nxc3! must have been a rude awakening for Lagno. The point is 24.Nxc3 (24.Rxc3 Rd1+ is murderous) Qb4! 25.Na4 Be6! 26.Qa8+ Bf8 27.Bc4 Bxc4 28.Rxc4 Qa3! (much faster than 28...Qxc4?) forcing mate.

FSR: It seems that just four days after this game was recognized as GOTD that M Illescas vs Kamsky, 1994 broke the record this game had set for the longest known time elapsed between pun submission and use as GOTD. That game took 13 years, 6 months, and 17 days! The present game was "only" 12 years, 8 months, and 5 days.
