plang: After 4..c6 the game had transposed to a sideline of the Slav. At Linares 1994 Kramnik had played 8 e3 against Shirov in a game that Shirov won with some nice tactics. 8 Nh4 is much stronger. 8..Ne7 would have been an interesting alternative that makes the e4 break a little more difficult for White to achieve. 13 Bb5+ was new; 13 Bxb8 had been played by Van Wely in his win over Salov at Amsterdam 1995. After 15 h4! Kramnik had a clear advantage. If 15..0-0 16 Kb1..Bf6 17 Bxc6..Qxc6 18 Qg3 followed by h5 would have been very promising for White. Kramnik probably should have pressed his initiative with 20 h5..g5 21 h6!. It was necessary for Gelfand to play 21..Rd8; after 21..Rb8? he lost material and the game. After 40 Rd1 there was no defense to the capture of the a-pawn.
