Jun-20-05  Jatayu: There's a lot of pressure on Mondays. I mean what if you don't get it....what if you fail miserably. The humiliation would be too much to bear.
Jun-20-05  Seraph88: haha you're right jatayu..and the pressure was pretty strong today..i gave up thinking too soon..the puzzle was pretty hard for a monday puzzle...
Jun-20-05  zabbura2002: If you try to get the whole thing, then that might put you under pressure..

cu8sfan: To spot the combination was easy but the follow through is quite longish for a Monday. Have a nice week y'all!
Jun-20-05  iron maiden: The classic Rxh5 Fischer sac here. If Black hadn't moved his second rook off the back rank I don't see how Tate could have broken through.
Jun-20-05  JSYantiss: I don't see it either, iron maiden. What would be a better move for Black than Ra2, I wonder?
Jun-20-05  chesswonders: A usual Monday.
Jun-20-05  superiorNOshow: This is something I would pull out in a 5 minute blitz game with this same opening. And I am sorry as this might sound shauvenistic to some of you, but honestly any seasoned player knows this is a very easy tactic to see. Why I was just playing the dragon earlier taday with a rook bishop exchange with dealy results. Ended up with two more pieces for the boot after some lengthy checks.

OhioChessFan: 14 moves on a Monday? Ugh. I got the first 3 anyway, and knew it was winning.
Jun-20-05  jahhaj: This was harder than Sanday's puzzle. The first move is obvious but checking that it works is not.

Jun-20-05  prinsallan: Wow, a three move monday puzzle.
Still, if this takes more then 15 secs to get I reccomend buying Chessmaster 10 and go through the tutorials.
Jun-20-05  pantlko: yes first 3 moves are quite easy to predict........
Jun-20-05  James Tiberius Kirk: Its a basic Fred Reinfielder
Jun-20-05  jamesmaskell: I had Qxh5 then push through with rooks. That white queen was destructive there.
Jun-20-05  Marco65: I stopped at 44. g7+, rolling back cause I thought it can't be so difficult for a Monday puzzle!

People who claim this was easy either are masters or just didn't solve it! You can say you solved the puzzle if you saw all moves up to 49.Qxg8+ that leaves White with one extra knight

Jun-20-05  jmuller: <You can say you solved the puzzle if you saw all moves up to 49.Qxg8+ that leaves White with one extra knight>

Marco:

Yeah, but if you only saw to 40.Qxh5, you're a pawn down (R v N & P), but you've got a strong attack, a safe King, and a passed pawn. Who wouldn't take that? It doesn't "solve" the puzzle, ture, but it would certainly win any game.

A *great* Monday puzzle! :-)

Jun-20-05  aw1988: I got Qxh5.
Jun-20-05  Stevens: I got this fairly quickly, which is rare for me. Not all the way to the end obviously, i don't have that much time, but i got to move 41 which i think is far enough!
Jun-20-05  Stevens: Just out of interest, can't black muster anything after 53...f4? Or is the black king too exposed? If the white knight moves after ...f4 then black can play 54...f3+ winning the rook and be on the verge of promotion.
Jun-20-05  mymt: 53. ...f4 54.Qa7+ Kc8 [or d8] if ...Kc6 55.Qa6+ wins Q now 55.Rg8+ forces # [I havent got a set to check but I think its right]
Jun-20-05  MaxxLange: Stevens: 53...f4 54. Qa7+ Kc6 55. Qa6+ and Black loses his queen as well. Time to resign!
Jun-20-05  Stevens: Thanks you two. After Qa7+ Kd8 i missed Rg8+ as the follow up!
Jun-20-05  Phoenix: I didn't get today's puzzle. I calculated 39.Rxh5 gxh5 40.Qxh5 Rxf4 <nobody's mentioned this move yet> and for the life of me, I couldn't see where to go from there. Black threatens a countercheck on f2, and if White starts checking 41.Qh7+ Kf8 42.Qh8+ Kf7 43.Rh7+ Kg6 I thought the King would escape to f5 and take e5 if checked again. Thinking, "Hey, this is a Monday puzzle, should be easy" I lached onto 40.g6 completely overlooking the fact Black has Rh8.

Going back, I see in my original line, White would not play my feeble 43.Rg7+, but 43.g6+ Kxg6 44.Qh5+ Kg5 45.Qh5 mates.

Easy puzzle, yes, but you didn't solve it unless you looked at EVERY line!

Maybe a theme for this week is "easy puzzles, long calculation".

Chessical: <Phoenix> You can mate slighlty more quickly in your line with:

39.Rxh5 gxh5 40.Qxh5 Rxf4 <41.Qh8+> Kf7 <42.g6+!> Kxg6 43.Qh7+ Kg5 44.Qh5 and mate.

Jun-20-05  Granite: Rxh5 is a pretty obvious move, even if some variations require a lot of moves it's very clear that the rook will be won back and white will be up at least a knight.
