Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-21-06  PhilFeeley: 11...Nxd4 is a poorly thought out sacrifice that soon loses.
Jun-01-06  notyetagm: <PhilFeeley> It's not a "poorly thought out sacrifice", it's desperation caused by the blunder 9 ... ♗e6??.

The point is that 10 d4! comes with tempo from hitting the exposed Black c5-bishop. Because Black needs to meet the threat to this bishop. he cannot do anything about 11 d5, forking the Black c6-knight and e6-bishop. This tactical idea is called the <Expanding Center Tactic> in Tony Kosten's book The Dynamic English, because the White d-pawn <expands> (advances) in the center with gain of time on the Black c5-bishop.

Mar-23-07  aazqua: David Bennion is nothing short of cracker jack. I would disagree with the charlatans posting above; his only poorly thought out decision on this day was to sit down to play a match of chess. Had they played pinochle instead I'm quite sure it would have been the venerable Mr. Miezis who would have been reduced to a quivering mound of jelly.
