Feb-02-08 | | wolfmaster: 29.? would be a good Thursday puzzle. |
Mar-12-08 | | RPGmaster60: I got the correct move and saw that it would be mate if black took the knight. However, I second guessed myself since I couldn't see a clear outcome if black did not take the night and played Ke8 |
Mar-12-08 | | Assassinater: Not taking the knight seems to lead to disaster after just trading rooks and playing Qd6 if the bishop recaptures or d7+ if the king recaptures. |
Mar-12-08 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Very satisfactory puzzle. I believe that at the time it was played, it was considered polite to allow the winner to show off the brilliancy of the combination; this must be why black took a quick mate with 29...Rxc8 instead of Kf8/Ke8 and getting massacred. |
Mar-12-08 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Okay, how about another puzzle from the same game: find the best move for white after 25...Rad8. White could do much better than what he played. click for larger viewProbably also Wednesday level. |
Mar-12-08 | | Capthahn86: if he does not take then 29...Ke8(29.Kf7?? 30.Rxe8+)30.Rxe8,Kxe8(29.Bxe8,30.Qe6+ (threatens the same mate as before so) 30...Rg7,31. Rd1,31.Qxd1(31...Be7,32.Qd7+,32.Kf8,33.Qd8 33.Bxd8,34.Rxd8++)31.Qd6+(31.d6+,31.Kxc8(31...Ke-
8 and mated.),32.d8=Q+, 32.Rxd8, 33. Rxd8+ and winning))31...Kxc8, 32.Qd7+ 32.Kb8, 33.d6 and unstoppable promotion threat. |
Mar-12-08 | | MostlyAverageJoe: Hmm, check out Jonathan Wilson <Years covered: 1795 to 2003. Current FIDE rating: 2293> With his puny 63 years of play, Korchnoi does not even begin to compete with that Wilson guy :-) |
Mar-12-08 | | Assassinater: <Okay, how about another puzzle from the same game: find the best move for white after 25...Rad8. White could do much better than what he played.> I'd play 26. Nf5+
26... Ke6 27. Rd6+ Rxd6 28. Rxd6+ Kxf5 29. Qd3#
26... Ke8/f8 27. Qd3, with problems either with Qxd8+ and Qd7+ on Ke8 or the bank rank problems along with Qxc8+ if Kf8. That's my take anyways. :) |
Mar-12-08 | | Capthahn86: My analysis was without computer assistance. The key is that every move is forced and patience. You gain more knowledge by figuring things out for yourself and with limited assistance. |
Mar-12-08 | | jovack: Nc8 allows black's queen in.
If Rxc8, queen pokes her way in and checks until mate.
Ke8? Rook trade, followed by taking the knight, and then queen skewers the king. White is up a whole rook and should win the rest of the game very easily. If there is a forced mate, i didn't see it, but that's what I would have played in real life since black may as well just give up after. Or Ke8, and black takes the rook back with the bishop, followed by the pawn advancing, and then bringing up the queen to finish the fight.
Kf8? Knight takes bishop, queen takes knight (Black cannot allow white's queen into the c7 square with a mistake like rook takes rook at d2 or its all over) pawn check and take a rook and promote. black is again destroyed, there is probably a forced mate in there somehwere but im not sure. |
Mar-12-08 | | Assassinater: Whoops, it should be 26... Ke8/f8 27. Rxd8 Bxd8 and then Qd3. |
Mar-12-08 | | zooter: ok..the black king is in a bit of a bind...so how about... 29.Nc8+? Black has the following replies:
29...Rc8 loses immediately to 30.Qd6+ Kf8 31.Qd7+ Kf8 32.Qf7# 29...Kf8 loses to the fork 30.e7+
29...Ke8 seems the best defense. Now white must play 30.Rxd8+ giving black the option of taking with the bishop or king. Let's see both: a) 30...Kd8 loses again(!) to 31.Qd6+ when black can run by 31...Kc8 32.Qd7+ Kb8 33.e7 and the pawn is unstoppable with a win for white b)30...Bxd8 31.e7(?) followed by Qd6 or Qb8?
Time to check |
Mar-12-08 | | zooter: Can somebody help me with the continuation of 29.Nc8+ Ke8 30.Rxd8+ Bxd8 -- what now? |
Mar-12-08 | | RandomVisitor: 29.Qf4 also wins... |
Mar-12-08 | | wouldpusher: <29.Nc8+ Ke8 30.Rxd8+ Bxd8 -- what now?> 31. e7 seems to be the only winning move, after which the threat of exd8=♕ wins; and 31. ... ♗xe7 32. ♕c7 loses. |
Mar-12-08 | | RandomVisitor: 18...Kf8 was probably Black's last chance to stay in the game. |
Mar-12-08 | | wouldpusher: <and 31. ... Bxe7 32. Qc7 loses> Loses for Black, I meant. |
Mar-12-08 | | dzechiel: White to move. Material even. "Medium/Easy."
The most forcing move for white is the only move that gives check: 29 Nc8+
The knight is untouchable. If 29...Rxc8 then 30 Qd6+ Ke8 31 Qd7+ Kf8 32 Qf7#. And if 29...Kf8 then 30 e7+ will win a rook. So black must play 29...Ke8
White needs to keep the ball rolling here. Right now I don't see anything better than 30 Rxd8+
Black can recapture two ways here...
- 30...Bxd8
- 30...Kxd8
On 30...Bxd8 I think that 31 e7 Bb6 32 Nd6+ Kd7 33 e8=Q+ Rxe8 34 Nxe8 wins at least a rook (there is probably better in the position). On 30...Kxd8 white can play 31 Nxb6 Qxb6 32 Qd3+ Kc8 (not 32...Ke8 33 Qd7+ Kf8 34 Qf7#) 33 Qd7+ Kb8 34 e7 and the pawn promotion cannot be stopped. Somehow I feel that white has a quicker way to end this, but these lines win a piece at worst, and are certainly enough to win the game. |

Mar-12-08 | | whitebeach: <zooter: Can somebody help me with the continuation of 29.Nc8+ Ke8 30.Rxd8+ Bxd8 -- what now?> After 31 Qd6 it’s over.

Mar-12-08 | | zooter: <wouldpusher: <29.Nc8+ Ke8 30.Rxd8+ Bxd8 -- what now?> 31. e7 seems to be the only winning move, after which the threat of exd8=Q wins; and 31. ... Bxe7 32. Qc7 loses.> <whitebeach: <zooter: Can somebody help me with the continuation of 29.Nc8+ Ke8 30.Rxd8+ Bxd8 -- what now?>After 31 Qd6 it’s over. >
I personally think e7 seems more forcing and safe....but I agree both 31.e7 and 31.Qd6 are powerful and white cannot be stopped from making significant material advantage |
Mar-12-08 | | D.Observer: Why not 14. ... O-O? |
Mar-12-08 | | Tactic101: I think this puzzle was more of a good intuition and instinct than calculation. I didn't bother to calculate all the way to the end, since I saw that the combination of queen and pawn would be deadly after the exchanges are finished. |
Mar-12-08 | | MJW 72: 14... 0-0 falls to 15.Qh5 h5 16.Qg5 (Because of the idea Qg5-h6-g7 mate.) |
Mar-12-08 | | TheBB: Mine was 29. Nc8+ Rxc8 30. Rd7+ Ke8 31. Qd6 Rg7 and then maybe 32. Rxb7? Any merit to this? |
Mar-12-08 | | mkrk17: I actually thought of taking black's queen by Ra1 and then Ra3. Looked to me like black cant do anything abt it. Any comments on this plan.. ? |
