An Englishman: Good Evening: This appears to be a duplicate of the following:

Owen vs Lowenthal / Barnes, 1856

In any case, it's curious that players stopped analyzing this 10.Bb5 line so abruptly. It hasn't been played since 1857, according to the database, which surprises me, since it seems to give White a decent game.

Dec-27-08  sneaky pete: This is in fact Staunton & Owen vs Löwenthal & Barnes, February 1856. The other version has the more likely move order 16.Nbd2 Be6 17.Qa4 .. which is also given in Ray Keene's <Howard Staunton, the English world chess champion>. Staunton played the improvement 12.Nc3 .. in Staunton vs Lowenthal, 1857, but, as Keene notes, 9.cxd4 Bb6 10.Bb5 .. was relegated to the dustbin (or dunghill) of chess history when Morphy introduced 9.e5 dxe5 10.Re1 .. against Kipping in Birmingham, 1858, which is as good as a forced win for white.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Nice research, <sneaky pete>. That Morphy chap would have to insert his own opinion, wouldn't he?
Jul-22-10  mrmietus: I thought what went wrong for black and I was thinking about Nxe5 to play at some moment. And my computer says that that move would be much better than h6 on move 18. That is just material advantage for black who could win.
