Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-05-13  RookFile: A move like 9. d5 makes you want to vomit. 9. Bb5 might not be bad. Most natural is 9. Na3.
Jan-05-13  thomastonk: <RookFile> There is nothing wrong with 9.d5. Maybe it doesn't fit your taste.

9.. Nd8 looks murky and 10.Be3 premature (I would like to recapture there with a knight), but Cochrane did not play this way, he intended another king side attack. Probably he missed a good opportunity with 17.g5.

Jan-05-13  fokers13: <thomas>:If g5,exf3 seems good.
Jan-05-13  thomastonk: <fokers13: If g5,exf3 seems good.> Okay, let's see: 17.g5 exf3 18.exf6 Qxe3+ (18.. Qxf6 19.Qxf6 gxf6 20.Ne4! ) 19.Rf2 and White has a clear advantage as I will show next.

If Black goes for the ending with 19.. Qg5 20.Qxg5 hxg5, he will lose many pawns, in particular d6 thanks to that dead horse on d8. And after 19.. Re8 20.Nxf3 White's attack isn't over. 20.. Rxe4? fails to 21.Qg3! g5(or g6) 22.Qxd6! , and after the best defence 21.. Qe4 22.Rg2 Qe3+ (22.. g6 23.Qxh6! or 22.. Qxh4 23.Rxg7+ and 24.Nxh4 and White wins due to some tactics) 23.Kh2 g6 24.Qg3 White has the clear advantage claimed above.

Jan-05-13  fokers13: Excuse me for not seeing a several moves variation with several branches which are obviously the result of computer analysis

Incidentally exf3 is indeed the best response but yeah you're correct in saying g5 was a better alternative than the text.

Jan-05-13  thomastonk: Dear <fokers13>, you are right: almost every line I post here is computer checked, and sometimes an engine has also given the idea, of course. As with my historical notes, which form the majority of my contributions, I don't like to present mistakes, when I kibitz analysis. Kibitzing is no competition (for me). Moreover, I try to find human explanations, see e.g. J L Kersten vs Euwe, 1922. People who dislike computer checked analysis can put me on their ignore list. I enjoy communication, unless it is provoking or dull, and hence questions and remarks are usually welcome.
